Normally they are here for the Fire Season. When that ends not sure. Not sure if LA County can lend they out either for mutual aid or not. The Martin Mars is at Lake Elsinore. See fencecheck.com
I saw a couple of those tankers at Van Nuys airport. Pretty big planes. :D
Here several of my Neptune shots from Fox Field.
Some P-3 shots...........
Nice one Brian!
INSANE! :o
Thanks!
Sweet ;)
Amazing pictures! ;)
Here is start of the Mars. Not my shot and don't give me any slack for it not being my shot per say. See me waaaay under there by the land wheels.

I like watching those airplanes fly in formation, usually around the SFV area.
Hmmm very intresting Skip. I would rather see more helicopters flying in our skies though.

I shot these at Fox last November, dropped them into a folder on my computer and promptly forgot that they were there, until today. So, a look back to last fire season...I'm sure there's gonna be more this year....

andI agree with Robert. ;)
Wasn't there something in the news in the last day or two that our CA. Governer signed an execcutive letter stating that he wanted the entire CDF aircraft fleet ready to fly for the begining of the fire season. I suppose that also includes the military helos and contract aircraft as well.
We are burning now >:D

Looks like a really devistating fire up in Santa Barbara. SDFD and Units from Cal Fire in San Diego County on their way to help out.
http://www.10news.com/news/19387112/detail.html
They have requested Tanker 10 (DC-10) to help out. Why did they not reqest this earlier. And WTF happened to the C-130J fron ANG Channel Islands at Pt Mugu? Its not the squadrons fault, but when the converted from the C-130E/H their fire fighting equipment was specific to those older modesl and when they got the C-130J's they did not fit and could not use them and they were developing new ones for the J's. WhyTF did they not hold on to a few of the E/H models to deal with CA wildfires until the new J's equipment was read? Its a great assest. Where was the Gov. in all this. Sorry to rant, but you can see my point I think. We need the bigger stuff out there.

As of 10/08 they were still waiting for certification of the modular firefighting equipment per the year in Review. Last year they played host to a Colorado Squadron that still had the older model C-130E/H

Cool shots, Nate! ;) <nikon> <laughing>
WOW :o
I was sitting upstairs in my office (about 3:35pm) and the entire house started to shake. I practically yanked the blinds out of my window trying to see what the heck it was and... there was the Mars passing directly out my window at about 800 feet on a downwind leg to skim Diamond Valley Lake. I practically crapped myself and grabbed my camera. :D By the time I figured out the lens cap was still on, and got my camera to autofocus through the blinds it was already a half mile away and starting to turn on final to the lake.
I flew down the stairs, grabbed my truck keys and hauled ass through the neighborhood heading towards the lake. Once out of the neighborhood I raced towards the west end of the lake. Amazingly, I was able to catch up quite a bit considering I had to run downstairs, jump in my truck and hit the highway. As I got halfway there, it was just getting back into the air after running the entire 4.5 mile length of the reservoir. I saw a helicopter with it, obviously theirs.
What's hilarious is that as it lumbered through the air headed northbound I tried to catch up with it in my truck, and was actually getting closer. ;D That's funny. But finally the road wasn't cooperating and I was heading WNW while he headed due N. He headed off in the direction of March ARB. I grabbed my cell phone and hit up trusty Goog 411, called the Marina and asked if they saw the flying boat. I asked if it would be coming back and they said no, they were just doing a test to see if they liked the lake. Dangit. If only I knew it was coming I would have had my blinds open and camera ready. ;)
lol I hate that when it happens to me... but it seems like you went pretty far to try to catch it. :o

Yeah it sucks. >:( It was a 6 mile round trip or so before I decided to head back towards the Marina to see if I could get in. Then when they said it wouldn't be coming back I headed home in defeat. ;)
I could always go to Lake Elsinore like all the guys that are actually
working for the shot, but I thought it was neat that there it was, right over my backyard. :D
Well at least you got 2 shots to prove that it was flying right over your house lol <laughing> ;)

Ugh... I KNEW I couldn't trust that lady!!!!!! I was leaving the house 45 minutes ago to go get some shots developed and there it was AGAIN!!! Flew right over my house and then landed on the lake... then took back off. Lying lady!!!! :D
Moments after that last post, it went over again. A 3rd time. Shot out my office window again... this time the camera wasn't far away. Still not a great shot... cropped a bit and stupid screen is in the way. And no time to attempt prop blur of any kind. They're fine tuning their approach to the lake as they get used to it. The ground track isn't as close to my backyard as it was the first time.
I'm formulating a guesstimate in my head here... with it heading in the direction of March ARB, with a turnaround of about 45 minutes... I'm guessing they're going to Lake Matthews, touch and go on that lake, then returning. Flying circuits between the two.
Not a bad shot Nate... ;)

There
may have been a fire... I don't know. I saw a Cal Fire S-2 coming back in to Hemet also. But it was the only time, so it couldn't have been much of one...
I did get out there and finally managed to put myself in a good spot to grab some shots. :) Turned out to be the last trip to our lake. Cool plane!! The thing is so slow and lumbering it almost looks like it's hanging in mid air. :D
You sure are one persistent photographer. Sheesh. Good work! :)
Thanks Josh <cheers>
Here's a couple more recent shots from last week. Tanker 73 and 72 working a fire into the late hours of the evening. As dark as it was, I was shocked when they went out one more time after this!

I took my nephew (he's 3) down to the base to so he could get around some airplanes. I got him turned on to airplanes at Blue Angels Winter Training this year. At first he was scared at the extreme chest rattling sounds, but before you knew it he loved it and now he doesn't stop talking about airplanes. He's my little airplane buddy. Now we're both just as crazy. :D
He makes me want a son that I can make into a pilot one day. 8)

Hey Brian... those shots of Tanker 55 you took at Fox Field back in February 08 (on page 1)... I'd love to buy one of those from ya next time I see you...
To the guys that frequent SBD or Fox... Are there still any DC-4s, 6s or 7s getting contracts? I'm kind of isolated since they haven't been cleared to operate out of here for a long time. I know there was all kinds of BS going on with the Forest Service regarding contracts for heavy air tankers, so I don't know what is going on exactly.
I know I miss the low pitched drone of those huge radials... just hearing that sound takes me right back to my childhood watching the tankers here in Hemet.
Last year, it was only the Sevens from Butler at Fox. Haven't seen them yet this year, but then again, things haven't gotten terribly busy there. Here's one from 2007.
Awesome, and great picture! If anyone sees them this year, can ya let me know? I'd really like to see one again... especially when you never know how long they'll keep em in the air.

California actually just cancelled the contract 2 weeks ago due to budget problems. Everything is getting cut right now...
They can still call for the -10s on an as needed basis (which costs more money) for a fire, but the contract is over. At least for now. :(

Had a little excitement down in my neighborhood yesterday when a propane tank exploded. SD Fire air attack was called in to help prevent the spread of the blaze to nearby canyons. Pretty impressive flying by those pilots!

Well... after work yesterday morning I decided to head down to Azusa instead of sleeping, and try to catch some action at the Morris Fire. So began my ordeal.
I left home at 8am. Got to Azusa around 9:30. Discovered that no part of the fire was visible from anywhere, just the smoke. That was fine, because I had planned on, and had no problem with -- finding a forest trail to drive on. Problem was... Hwy 39 was closed completely all the way down in the city. It didn't even allow you to go a single mile closer. And so, you couldn't get to ANY of the trails. Same thing in Glendora, with Glendora Canyon Road. They had the thing locked down like no other.
So I get the bright idea to head up Hwy 2 (Angeles Crest) and out flank the road block. Thinking maybe I could get a better view driving in from the north. So I drive all the way out on the 210 to La Canada Flintridge and hop on Angeles Crest. Never been that way before. Wow, I was really taking the scenic route. Before long I was really regretting that I had set off that way. My lifted truck and mud terrains are a chore on a winding mountain road like that. Minutes turned into hours. Eventually, I noticed the road was taking me away from the fire more often than turning towards. Soon I was on the north side of the mountains, and could see desert. Is that Lancaster and Palmdale?! Crap! :-X I have to be home for work in a few hours!
After a long time of more driving, I saw a turn coming up on my GPS for the San Gabriel Canyon road. I pondered for a moment turning onto it, but decided against it. It looked like a heckuva long drive in itself, and I already was pissed that I was burning an entire tank of gas for nothing. Further, I figured to myself that I would probably drive for an hour on that only to find a road block and NOTHING that I could see. So I bypassed it and just wanted to get off that friggin mountain. 45 minutes later I dropped into the Cajon Pass, pissed off and with nothing to show for it. I was going to be going back to work with no sleep, and no shots.
To console myself, I decided to stop at the tanker base, since I was in the area. The main thing I wanted was to get some shots of the fed tankers on the fire (we never see them out here anymore), but I would settle for takeoff and landing shots.
Some of the fed tanker action from the USFS Tanker Base.
A nice mix of federal contract assets. All my old favorite Neptunes and my absolute favorite - an Aero Union Orion, with a pair of SEATs mixed in.
Tanker 27, Aero Union (P-3A)
Tanker 11, Neptune Aviation (P-2V)
Tanker 43, Neptune Aviation (P-2V)
Tanker 72, Cal Fire (S-2T)
Tanker 73, Cal Fire (S-2T)
Tanker 486 (Aero Tech SEAT)

My buddy Nick and I decided we were going to see how close we could get to the Cottonwood Fire out here. We knew the air ops were scheduled to start at 8am, so at 6:45 we left town. The fire is only 8 miles east of me, but Highway 74 is closed, so we had to drive 50 miles around the mountain, head to Banning, and then climb Highway 243. I know this mountain range like the back of my hand because of all the trail riding I do with my quad, so I
knew there was a series of trails coming down out of Pine Cove that would take me right to the back side of the fire. We were up in Pine Cove at 6700 feet elevation, got on the trail... and started the hour long decent down the mountain switchbacks. At about 4500 feet elevation, we rounded a ridge line and there was the fire, straight down a cliff about 1500 feet below us. 8)
Soon as we got there, Coulson's (Martin Mars) S-76 spotter aircraft was flying around us, surveying the area. A few times he passed by us at eye level and only 100 yards away from the cliff face... we thought we were gonna get yelled at and kicked out. :-[ But nothing was ever said. ;D
20 minutes later, here comes the Mars... dropping very close to where we were. Unfortunately we had driven up the trail and missed our front row seats. We came right back after that.
About an hour later, three Cal Fire S-2s came flying in together and surprised us by dropping RIGHT where we were. We were at eye level with them, and many times ABOVE them, which made for some cool shots looking down on them! They returned 4 times to the same area.
Here is Cal Fire Tanker 71, diving in pure knife edge flight...
Another diving pass in knife edge flight by 71 (being flown today by a female pilot - don't know who). She sure can fly though.
<rocker>
This one passed our position on the cliff face at less than 100 yards away. I couldn't even get the entire aircraft in frame in the first shot... that's how close we were.
From Fox Field this afternoon and evening........
An attempt at reposting the first one from above.........
I love dusk shots. Nice work Brian. I like the 2nd one that is in close. The head on shot.
In case anyone is interested... here is video of the show we got yesterday. Watch in HQ and crank your volume. ;D My buddy Nick shot video as I was shooting with the Nikon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l7-KgOfDnM
By the way... listen to the turbines on Tanker 71 starting at 50 seconds into the video. Such an eerie, yet wickedly bad ass sound. Never heard an S-2T make that sound before. Her tanker was making that sound every time she came in for a drop. Don't know if it was her pitch selection or what it is.

Thanks ;D
The Cottonwood Fire is only 30% contained in the last USFS update, which was 15 minutes ago. Even still, it's crapping out all on it's own. This morning it laid down and it hasn't gotten back up yet. I think it's going to die off tonight for sure.
Thursday and Friday were a different story. It was taking off like crazy (11 year old fuel) and kept on breaking through the retardant and dozer lines. The containment level actually was degraded because it kept racing up the canyons and leaving the containment area.
But yeah, I think it's as good as dead now. It's history. Station on the other hand... 20,000 acres?!?! :o The first
two days it only burned 20 acres. 20 acres in two days? It was a little wimp. Now it's a thousand times bigger (literally!) and it's actually burning homes. The most recent update is nearly 40 structures. Mandatory evacuations for parts of La Canada Flintridge, Altadena and Tujunga.
I was really enjoying the rare birds eye view :)
And an overview shot... retardant drifting to the ground.
Here are a couple that I took at San Bernardino International Airport on the Way home from Big Bear tonight.
Wow, those are some unbelievable shots! That lighting is spectacular. You even caught the beacon winkin' at ya in the first shot! Beautifully done, Kevin! 8) <thumbsup>

Hahahaha... We had Tanker 27 out here at the Cottonwood Fire ONE time before dusk on friday. Returned to SBD for shut down and we never saw any USFS assets on the fire the rest of the incident. ::) Not that I have a problem with the S-2s -I love em. It's just been forever since the Forest Service has worked anything around here. And in the past, they always would fly on our fires.
They've added some AgCats to the air attack, out at Fox right now. Has been clear most of the morning so far, but now the smoke is filling the valley again, looks like we might have nice lighting conditions again this afternoon. Here are a few more from yesterday.
So ominous, so threatening. That makes a dramatic shot. Wow. :o
Sorry TNT, these guys know drama. ;D
That shot of the Minden Neptune departing with the Aero Union Orion landing in the same shot. That... is... sick. 8)

It's crazy to see that this Mount Wilson fire is burning out of control. Apparently, it is expected to reach the top throughout the night. My heart goes out to all the people who are involved in this big incident, as well the ones that have made sacrifices to save others.
They have NOT been playing around with the Oak Glen III Fire. We had numerous DC-10 drops by both 910 and 911 yesterday. This morning, I was shocked to see Tanker 979 (Evergreen's 747 Supertanker) arrive and make 2 drops. Each one being practically as large as the DC-10s full load. :o
If I'm not mistaken, this would be the first official use of the 747 fighting a live fire in California, if not the US. Correct me if I'm wrong. :)
Then 910 came back through one more time a couple hours later. Otherwise they've had Tanker 27, two SEATs, and three S-2s (72, 73, 75) on it.

Is this an APSOCAL exclusive? Great catch.
Here are some general pics of the Station Fire, as seen from down in Soledad Canyon. For this set, rather than close-up pics, I wanted to provide more of a perspective of the fire and the ops, so some of the pics don't even have planes in them (horrors!).

Hawaii Mars has been rattling windows at my house all week. I had to wait until Friday to take a chance and head up to the lake in hopes that they would do it again. They did, so I finally got some good shots of it up close.
I'm shocked that they're still down here. It's december! I figured they'd be back in Canada by now.

I'm jealous of any and all Aero Union action. That was a nice shot.
As some of you know (I know Damon knew because I got the email this morning) there was a freak brush fire yesterday... that actually managed to get 5 tankers flying out of Hemet. I was down there right as the sun was going down and they flew right up until the cutoff (civil twilight). Here's some of the stuff... which included 83 out of Columbia and 88 out of Grass Valley (sister ship of Hoser's 89).
I also went back out there to get some night shots a few hours later.
Nate, you and those nighttime shots....They are awesome! How long of an exposure are you shooting?
Yeah great shots and the greenish too them is cool.
Thanks guys 8) I like to go low as I can on the ISO and still get the exposure right. Shutter was at 25 seconds on most of them... and there is actually a greenish florescent light on the tower that casts that hue across whichever aircraft is closest to the tower. :D

Heres two Erickson S64E's taken at Henderson Airport, Vegas over New Years Eve. Nothing special but looked really cool against the mountains and also the strip behind them...my first decent shots of anything fire-fighting and look forward to getting some action shots at some point in the future.
Me and Nate (Kick Z) were out at Hemet today watching 6 Cal Fire Tankers do some spring training today. He got a lot more and a lot better pics than I did. I film most of the time. (video will be up soon hopefully of the night training)
Cool screens Nick 8) can't wait to see the video.
Had some fun watching yesterday's training ops, which included a night operations hop. At one point we had 6 in the pattern doing touch and goes around 9pm... for a second I almost thought I was at El Centro. <laughing>
It was fun, and very cool to have a bunch of tankers here in late march. Cal Fire decided Hemet would be a good environment for their new pilot training this year, instead of McClellan. Got a chance to shoot the tankers in almost total darkness, which is not something I get a chance to do too often unless someone is returning from a long range mission. We had other cool photo ops as well... including two different engine-out on takeoff drills. Instructor surprises the trainee in the middle of the takeoff roll by pulling an engine to simulate losing it. Trainee has to jettison the load and get off the deck by the end of the runway on one engine.
The first engine out drill of the afternoon...
nice shots guys. Nate, did they actually dump there loads during the training? Or is that just protocol? Can't wait to see the video nick.
Thanks Chris... Yep they dumped the load as part of the drill. The instructor actually pulls the prop pitch to neutral I believe, which mimics the loss of the engine since it no longer is pulling. They aren't loaded with Phoschek though, just water.
It was rough shooting in darkness, particularly things that were passing by within 100 feet of us at 110 kts. I'm really looking forward to Nick's video. It was cool. We had a tanker passing us every 30 seconds or so when all 6 were in the pattern. 8)

Thanks MD! Now the bad news... about 15 shots after these were taken, my shutter froze. :( My camera is currently inoperative.
Did some reading and noticed others that have had this problem were using the camera in humid conditions or around moisture. I was taking shots of 301 and 305 hoverfilling when it happened, and we were getting light (really light) spray in the rotorwash. I don't see how or why it affected the camera though, I mean we're talking minute. I've seen way more moisture walking around with my camera on foggy days.
Anyway, now I have to figure out how I'm going to resolve this. :( In the meantime, I'm dead in the water...

Back in the days of film a camera would last longer becuase you could not afford unlimited rolls of film to develop. Today it's almost shoot as much as you want and cameras break. Time to get another as back up so you have an extra on hand. While one is getting fixed you can still shoot. Good luck.

Exaaaaaaaaaactly... I was telling my mother in law about it, she shoots with a Canon film SLR. She was amazed that I had a problem and I told her that even though she's had her camera for 15 years and shoots like crazy with it (she brings it to dinners at restaraunts for God's sake) - I've probably still got 50 times as many shots on mine. I'm now regretting all those flippant shots I'd crank off. I'd shoot stuff that I knew was never going to be good for God knows why. <laughing> Well, I know why... because I never had to worry about paying to develop them. *face palm*
I was thinking about it the day it broke and I probably have something like 80,000 or 90,000 shots on the thing. If that guess is even close to being right, the shutter unit was a trooper. Good call on the two body thing, I was just thinking that this morning. The bad thing is I don't know that I could afford a new body at the moment, but I NEED one. I was checking out Nikon USA refurbished models at Adorama. May do that, and then send this one in for repair a few months later, then have the two bodies. :)
Thanks Skip for all the insights. 8) I did look at Craigslist last night... the only thing that scares me is if someone has a camera they know is getting ready to take a dive and I end up buying it I think I'd cry. <laughing>

That second Tanker 21 shot is just one of the best I've ever seen. Love the clouds.
Hitting the fire hard. Just heard about it this morning. I think they last 50 homes already.
Great shots Michael!
Oh good Lord Almighty. :o
Hands down some of the most gorgeous shots I've ever seen. I'm green with envy over here! I was crawling in my skin at work last night, knowing how bad I wanted to get to Tehachapi or Fox and not being able to.
Thanx guys 99% luck and 99% good lighting-- tonight I'm sure will be another good one. I did over 700 shots in less then an hour last night!!

Waiting to see if Brian or MD have a ton of Fox Field tanker action after the West Fire yesterday. 14 air tankers assigned. Half of Cal Fire's S-2 fleet was there with a handful of Fed tankers.
Sorry Nate, I didn't know about the fire until this morning. Posted a few shots over in the Fox Tanker Ops thread.
Mike! Those shots from Tues are AWESOME!!! <cheers>
Mike
That first S-2 is perfect......a talented photgrapher and wonderful lighting.
Its a poster pic.
Thanx Brian and Skip! really appreciate the feedback
Get ready Fox shooters, here we go again...
Waiting to see what the morning brings. Crown fire is about a mile from my house. Yikes.
Didn't make it home in time from Santa Clarita to catch anything flying in daylight. 2 hour plus drive to Palmdale.
Man things got bad yesterday -- stuck on the 14 for two hours chasing 3 fires hoping across the frwy into palmdale caught up with Brian at sunset Fox field chasing the P-3 from each end of the runway!!

Wow, great shots yet again Michael. I was LAFD 412 yesterday coming from Beverly Hills and heading back north. Not sure if they were going to go help. I did see ALOT of engine companuies heading north on the 405 from stations in the South Bay.
Stood out on Lake Elizabeth Rd last night watching and waiting to see where the flames were going (luckily not close to home yet).
There were engines and work crews from all over Southern California. Too many cities to name them all, but there were dozens staging on Lake Elizabeth Road at 25th West.
I got some hand held and tripod high ISO pictures of some of the action near my house.
I'll post some up on Flickr since most are more of a "oh crap this is close" snap shot variety and not really worthy of the great shots you guys post up here. :)
Got this Huey from Godde Pass before Johnny Law kicked us all out...........
Gorgeous shots guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whew, what a long drive from Hemet to Aqua Dulce. I was just on top Hauser Mountain and the repeater/communications tower site that they're defending. Had a Parks Dept and Santa Barbara Co Fire strike team up there with me and a bunch of LA Co Fire command vehicles. The tankers were dropping right on top of us up there, trying to save the repeaters. Pics to follow.
Action from the repeaters:
Evergreen's 747 was dropping just south of Rancho Vista in Palmdale today. Unfortunately the shots I got were full of smoke and power lines. There are A LOT of happy homeowners there now, as the fire came right down to their backyards and fire personnel stopped it right there. It's not out, plenty of hot spots, but it's no longer the major threat to Palmdale and Quartz Hill that it was last night.
A few more.
I saw the Evergreen Supertanker working the Crown fire. Is it stationed locally during the fire or does it fly back home?
The Supertanker 747 is based out of KSBD for the next 5 days.
Wow great shots Nate!! I never can get an actual drop like you get!!

Wow great shots Nate!! I never can get an actual drop like you get!!
Thanks MD, well if you were able to grab a good spot I know you'd come up with the most dramatic, badass drop shot there ever has been! ;D It's hard to find these spots though, I've tore my truck up the last 2 seasons getting into the backcountry. <laughing> LOL.
I was tempted to go to Fox, but they never would have held a candle to the shots you get over there!
Oh here's a crappy cell phone pic of my truck on Hauser Peak. I thought it was kinda neat that I was the only civilian way up there on the peak. There was practically no room left on the mountain for any more vehicles. I had to wait when I was leaving for the strike teams to finally stop coming up the road, because the road going back down the mountain wasn't only steep as heck, but it was one lane. I would've had to back up the mountain if I encountered the strike teams head on.
Had a new fire start in Oak Glen last night. At one point it had 6 tankers on it because of the bad things that usually happen when Oak Glen burns.
Man Nate, I don't know how you do this !! you really get around to get the shots !! Very impressive
About as close I got up on P-12 in Palmdale :

Yeah 27 is lookin' gorgeous after her repaint this winter. 23 got a fresh coat of paint this winter as well. Haven't seen 22 in forever! Can't wait to see the pics. 8)
Caught Tanker 22 on the ramp at Ramona. Yes, I drove all the way down there just to see her. <laughing> She's definitely needing a fresh coat of paint. :)

From the Minto Fire this afternoon south of Sage (and east of Vail Lake). Finally! This season has been so slow I've been having withdrawls on my air tanker fix.
Clinton Fire in Murrieta this afternoon just below the Ortega Highway. Tanker 27 (P-3A) and Tanker 71 (S-2T)
And yes, I ended up wearing Phoschek again. It was bound to happen. <laughing> I actually took my 2nd, 3rd and 4th retardant hits all together in the same afternoon. ;D

They're scanned in. I noticed I actually had some prop blur. And to think I would get mad when my mom would buy me 200 speed film! :D I guess mom knew best! ;)

Which C-130 is #83? Civilain or Mil?
Yep, like Keith said it was owned by Hemet Valley Flying Service. They had received 5 Hercs and had painted up most of them, but that one was rushed into service in it's camo.
It was part of the federal air tanker scandal that later ended up causing quite a to-do. A total of twenty-two C-130As and six P-3As were given out to several private contractors for use in firefighting. Half the C-130s were diverted from AMARC, and the other half were taken from AFRES units. The scandal mainly involved the Hercs, and a couple individuals that acted as brokers. They were supposed to be obtaining the aircraft and just distributing them to the contractors. In reality, one of the brokers was transferring them into his own name and selling them for profit himself. The majority of the firefighting companies had conducted themselves as they should have and have unfairly been tarnished by the whole thing.
Aero Union received all the P-3s and used them as intended. A few of the C-130s were also sold back and forth for profit by a couple of the private companies that received them. There were even incidents in which a pair of the C-130s owned by T&G Aviation had been leased out to "people" in South America and had ended up flying drugs.
Anyway, to make a long story short, a couple people ended up going to prison, but the tankers continued to fly. Then, three of the C-130s crashed due to wing box structural failures in flight. The most well known case of this was Hawkins & Powers Tanker 130, in which the wings were caught seperating from the aircraft on video while fighting a fire in Yosemite. :( In 2004 the entire fleet of C-130As was grounded by the USFS claiming they could no longer in good conscience declare them safe, and most of the companies that were operating the C-130s went under.
Tanker 20 on the "Long" Fire off Ortega Highway this afternoon. Hadn't gotten any action shots of 20 until today.
Some S-2Ts from the Ortegas.

We didn't get that lucky. Love that angle of Copter 6 dipping.

Finally got a chance to grab some shots of Tanker 17... Aero Union's newest and most elusive bird.
Tanker 890 and 891 are out from Minnesota looking for an extended contract. They're the first SEATs on floats I've ever seen in person. Tanker 891 is a dual seat version of the AT-802, also the first I had ever seen in person. I had always seen the single seaters.

Hahahaha :D Yeah, for sure the floats are pretty jarring... I may be warped, but when they're on the landing gear I think they actually look decently slick! <laughing>
BTW, this is a cool video from a Southern California fire a few years back... if nobody has ever seen it. A very close call by the SEAT pilot right at the beginning of the video. He's dropping upslope for one, which is generally a no-no 95% of the time. Also, you'll notice he miscalculates his altitude and energy just a tad... actually drags the gear and flaps through the weeds, coming very close to clipping the people standing in front of the house. :o

Exactly. The one lady in the video showing off the phos-check on her shirt... Yea, that means you should have already left.
During the Crown Fire, we evacuated shortly after a low flying 747 dropped 20k gallons of phoschek on the hill behind us.
Right about the same time the Sheriff deputies started screaming at us to get out "NOW".
Didn't have to tell us a second time.
Luckily the air and ground crews protected our neighborhood and the only damage was a scorched gazebo in a neighbors yard.

Some shots from San Bernardino today. The US Forestery SHORT 330 was carring smoke jumpers. Tanker 72 departing for a fire.
I have never seen a USFS Shorts. Nice.
Seems odd they'd have Smokejumpers out here on the West Coast too.
Yep, they only fly them down here when we have a good chance of getting heavy lightning activity. They jumped on a lightning start on the ANF last week, and 2 in BDF.
Went out to Fox Field this afternoon to see if anything was flying in support of the Hill Fire down in the Cajon Pass...caught Tanker 910 high flying over Lancaster and a couple of Neptunes ending their day.

Wow, that first shot is amazing, Bernie. How'd you get the PhosChek off the camera :)
With the fire up by Tehachapi raging, I was able to shoot these at Fox Field from the side of the road. There's probably been enough to shoot all the way until dark, but I reached my limit and the vicodin wasn't doing much good for my legs. There should be some nice shots from the action out there when everybody gets home and get's them ready to post. :)
I was really pleased with the second shot as I was able to catch the Neptune landing and lining up right in front of another P-2 on the ramp. :D
Great to see you out there this morning, Jim.

Nah, I only stayed til about 1pm. When I drove down to Apollo Park, the Bronco was just sitting there between a couple of Neptunes that looked like they were having some work done.
Place was hopping, though. Turn around time on the S2T's is impressive.

Unfortunately 10 Tanker plans to close their doors in November, as of 2 weeks ago. A DC-10 was sent to Texas, depending on the number of drops and time they spend there, the doors might stay open until the end of the year.
That being said, that's an AMAZING shot Bernie.
Another company out of business and they invested so much to those two DC-10. Such a same to lose them and for all those people to get pink slips. :'(
Yep... When we get a normal fire season (aka BAD) in California again, it's going to be insane. The fleet of fixed wing air tankers nationwide is not even close to being a shell of it's former self. Back in the 90s, there were nearly 100 heavy air tankers in the US. Now, there are 11. (all Neptunes). And the USFS has already said the Neptunes are in their last or nearly last season.
There is no clue. USFS Fire & Aviation Management has no idea what they're doing. They deserve every bit of Feinsteins harrassment that they get.
Cal Fire still has their excellent fleet of S-2Ts... but when the SHTF, it's like spitting a line around the fire. That's why one or two large fires will tie up their entire fleet of 23. The USFS ain't pulling their weight on federal lands anymore either.
The VLAT situation... 10TAC disappearing would bring the number from 3 to 1. The USFS might need to invite Hawaii Mars back after they kicked them to the curb last year as not needed.

They had a third DC-10 parked over in their area, now it's empenage is sitting on the ground, unattached from the rest of the fuselage. Not sure what the story was exactly, but there was talk of making a 912 - to accompany 910 and 911 - obviously that hasnt panned out.
Yea, its a bad situation all around. CA is going to be so screwed if we have another Station Fire - shoot we were pretty screwed with all the assets we did have on that fire. 10 tanker has been systematically thinning the herd over the last months, its no surprise really to the remaining employees, just the shock of the last day being penciled in.
Last year was relatively slow, so im guessing that's what has lulled the state into this sense of false security. I'd say this year is pretty much par for the course, right? 10 tanker has been out on 3+ fires? Unfortunately the hardest lesson learned is the best learned and CA would rather spend its money on who-knows-what (i have a guess, but its not repeatable in polite company)
Some shots from Saturday as they were trying to wrap up the Canyon fire near Tehachapi...before the rash of lightning strikes Saturday afternoon.

Yeah by the USFS.
They finally got 4 mobilized. The MAFFS take until hell freezes over to mobilize. The USAF doesn't even like providing aircraft for that mission. It wasn't until 2 weeks into the Texas fires (and 1000 homes lost) that 4 MAFFS finally made their way to Texas.

A-26 Invader, the B-26 is the Marauder ;)
A late night typo I'm sure ;D
The A-26 was redesignated B-26 upon the Marauders retirement from USAF service in 1947.
The OnMark B-26K conversions were renamed A-26A when they were sent off to Vietnam in the mid-60s.
:)

Hmm, that's lame. My bad.
I was very excited to have my house shaken by a C-130 flying into Hemet-Ryan :o early yesterday morning at 6:30am. I hopped in the truck and blasted the 2 blocks down to the base in my fuzzy slippers with camera in hand. It has been 8 years since a C-130 has been here, after our own Hemet-Valley Flying Service C-130A tankers were grounded by the USFS and sent off to Arizona to rot.
Luckily International Air Response bought all of them to add to their existing C-130A fleet. Better yet, this C-130 that flew in, WAS one of our old Hercs (Tanker 83) and it was really neat to see her saved from the junk heap. She came home to visit, looking sharp in her new IAR colors. Everyone that was at the field gathered around the plane in astonishment, it was like a UFO had landed. ;)
They're going to be training the special ops forces of an allied middle eastern nation for the next several weeks. The training is in airborne insertion and airborne operations. Apparently, this foreign nation has hired instructors from Perris Valley Skydiving for the training so they will be working with them.
The weather was great to be shooting in! One of the neater skies I've seen in Hemet. Almost makes it look more like Florida than Riverside County. ;)
2nd shot is one of my old film scans of this exact plane returning from a fire in 1995.
