For those frequent North Island photogs, I hope you wern't there today as the Coronado Brdge was closed for about 3and 1/2 hours and everyone leaving Coronado, Including myself had to drive around the Strand. Some disturbed individual ??? decided he wanted to Jump off the center span. He Did not and gave up to the CHP. :-\ :o

Here is the story about the individual who tried to jump off the Coronado Bridge in San Diego on 12/02/08
Woman threatens to jump from bridge, jamming I-5
December 3, 2008
SAN DIEGO – A distraught woman gave up to police negotiators yesterday after threatening to leap from the San Diego Coronado Bridge, which was closed to traffic for more than four hours.
While officers tried to persuade the woman to surrender, afternoon commuters trying to leave or get into Coronado were detoured onto the Silver Strand. Southbound traffic on Interstate 5 was jammed between Mission Hills and Chula Vista.
Witnesses reported to the California Highway Patrol about 1:45 p.m. that a woman was running up the bridge from the east end in San Diego. A few minutes later, she was sitting on the railing. A San Diego police negotiator was called, and the bridge was closed to traffic.
Hundreds of commuters caught on the bridge were guided by CHP officers to make U-turns and return the way they had come, said CHP Officer Brad Baehr.
The woman surrendered about 5:10 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Motorists were allowed back on the bridge by 6 p.m. –P.R.

Nice pics rander. Would you happen to know if taht is an A+ hornet? or is it just an A. My question for that is because i thought A+'s had IFF (bird slicer) antennas on the nose.
With out gettting up close to the aircraft I could not tell. I do recall that not every F-18 had those bird slicer antennas. I recall when I worked in Building 94 that there were 2 successive BUNO aircraft in the hanger for overhaul, I had them and one did not.
Rander, Did you catch the S-3's from PT MuGU yesterday, they were heard on the radio, and seen from dog beach, Bloodhound 700 & 701 working rwy 29

pics below are from 06/11 an F-18 doing a touch and go BUNO is reported on Fencecheck as 162831. I usually don't keep track of BUNO's.

Having worked the F-18 overhaul line in building 94, I only wish you guys could spend a week and see some of the thing those aircraft are disassembled to so you would get some Idea of the labor needed to repair and reassemble those aircraft. That RK45 aircraft has been here a while as last weeek they brought in RL43 98 aircraft in the PMI level one repair cycle and that doessn't count the centerbarrel or In Service Repair (ISR) aircraft that were also worked.
Yeah thats true but with a little touch up that jet would be sexy... ;)

I think, Rander correct me, the paint job is last on list after overhaul.
After the Post MaintenanceCheck Flight (PMCF), the aircraft will be complete defueled, thououghly washed and then stripped of all old paint. The serface treated with a clear corrosion inhibitor, then 2 coates of a brown metal protectant, then a zinc Cromate primer and then the Low-Vis gray surface paint. (BTW all of the aircraft on board The Midway Museum get thie same paint treatment that active Navy and Marine Corps aircraft get).
A PMI Level One overhaul is supposed to take between 8,000 to 8500 manhours and/or between 125-140 days to complete depending on the level of repair after the aaircraft is to recieve after it is disassembled I can remember a couple of instances wher those numbers were completely blown apart. A lot of that depwnds on the corrosion work done my the operating activities(the Squadrons) and how much effort they put into Corrosion Control.

in reference to my (post #215) C-2 pics of 11/18/09, the non color bird took off about 2:50 PM and did touch and go's till the other one took of at about 3:05PM then they joined up and headed west out to sea.The non color bird may have been to El Centro earlier in the day.
Well they must have just quickly joined and then seperated... because she arrived all by herself at El Centro around 3:35pm or so. Left El Centro right about at 4pm almost on the dot (as we were sadly leaving the runway in our bus).
Here's Password 37 during one of about a dozen bounces on the 18th. This one was probably 3:45 ish:

THis USN C-20G BUNO 165094 landed after the above C-130. I had to leave quickly as a Naval Officer was also parked there and sped away quickly to appearently call security to report my photography. You know i was once at the officers club there on base for mother's day brunch, and that parking lot right there is perfect for taking shots, so i went there and snapped a few up. A few days later i read all the brew-ha about the people taking photos outside the base, and here I was at the fenceline! Luckily i didn't have any issues, but i could see how it could turn south quick!

Had I gone to the officers club parking lot No one would have said any thing. I was driving west on Quintin Roosevelt road and I saw the C-130 about to land so I pulled into a lot on the other side of the runway and shot from inside the cab of my truck except for the shot of the C-20 taxiing which I got out and shot. Thats when the officer sped off and I felt I better get out of there too.

Nice shot, I want to get over to San Diego bay sometime soon to take a shot of 3 carriers in port. Maybe Harbor Island...or the Midway pier. What would be cool is to get a shot with all three plus the Midway. Maybe i'll spend sometime on Bing maps today to see how i can make this work...I'm thinking Shelter Island maybe.
Rander, the paper says the three won't be there for long, and idea on who and when will be the next one out? I know it won't be the Reagan, so i am guessing the Nimitz?

This is what "I think" you could see.
The Reagan is about to come out of SRA (Scheduled Reduced Availablity). The Nimitz just two weeks ago returned from a major overseas deployment and The Vinson just out of overhaul. I think what you will see Is the Reagan will go out to sea for a few days to check the ships systems that have been inactive the last few months. When the Reagan leaves, the Nimitz wiil move where the Reagan was. The Vinson will rest for 2 or 3 weeks and then start working with their regular air wing (I heard that CVW-17 from the east coast was on Vinson for the trip to San Diego). The Vinson could be a ready deck and could do carrier quals for student pilots in T-45 squadrons and replacement VFA squadrons. For the Vinson , The trip from Norfolk to San Diego is not considered to be a deployment and the time at sea is just extra time doing what they are to be doing anyway, operating a Ship at sea!
If your going to get a pic of the 3 carriers better do it real soon.

Pier "K" Nimitz

Some C-2A Greyhound shots from today. I was at the North West corner of Fenway Park and I had to leave shorty after a swarm of Bees moved into my area of the parking lot.
Three Viper shots, not really a lot of good light Skys were overcast leaving a whitish looking overhead, made it difficult to see approaching aircraftbefore they were on top of you. Between the overcast and the Bees, my time at Fenway Park was relatively short.

my first visit to nasni was in 2003 with back then, the highlights for me;
then, in Oct2004;
and in 2005, my last year of slides...;
then, in spring 2006, digital. the canon eos350 (rebel i believe?)
this was a nice trip. i saw new stuff, but also end(s) of a era. my last H-3 shot in coronado, and one of the last S-3's...
Robert
As you can see, i am back on a yearly basis. I got family in San Diego. Coronado and dog beach are my favorite spots to spend time...
this time it was diffrent. not too many aircraft, no sun as i was used to in san diego. but there was the FC Yuma photocall and i got a ride in the chasecar at Beale. glad i saw an S-3 at nasni...
Robert
2008 was the best year yet. several visits to coronado, and shot some visiting stuff. the RBAR was cool, with some additional visiting birds. the last day of my vacation was jackpot. 37 T-45 shot, 2 skytrains and 3 prowlers. some local helo's and a couple visiting ones from far away and a couple of weekend stops. awesome!
Robert
2009 was me and girlfriend. spend 2 days at coronado (first and last vacationday) but luck ran out...
the hornet was on our 1st day, no sun seen... the viper on our last day. they (5) came in, when the fog came in.
this was in August...
Robert
to continue with previous posts; this year was terrible. our first day spend in seaworld (very nice) second day at imperial and coronado, with thunderstorms.
3 aircraft shot, without sun. i salvaged this one, but nothing special...
i figured, a week later i'd get my "revenge" here. at the Miramar airshow, my girlfried got phoned, that her grandmother died. end of trip, end of "revenge". next year though, i'll be back. i'll make it right :) at 100yrs naval aviation in Feb...

Chris, The A-10's are from DM, saw them flying yesterday, 2 were on the ramp and watched 4 recover 6 or maybe 8 are there on a Det with nice load outs, I didnt get any pics :(
A sampling of what I saw today 12/03/10 THe F-18 taxiied to the FRCSW test line perhaps for induction into overhaul. There are perhaps 11 or 12 A-10s on the ramp at NI. looks like a little more than normal flying for the next week or so.

I will only say this when shooting at Dog Beach. Make sure you keep your camera well hidden when shooting at Dog Beach. There have been times when visiters to the beach see a camera the think you're taking pics of other people and they call The City of Coronado Police. The Coronadoi Police will threaten to bring you in to headquaters if there is a complaint about photography on the beach. The Coronado Police are well versed in the Governments regulation on photography of government property including aircraft and ships. There have been times when photographers have not been hassled at all.
!. Keep your camera out of sight when not shooting aircraft.
2. Don't take pics of other people
3. have a good time on the beach.
I dunno, I've never been hassled by the police when I'm out at the beach. Then again, I rarely take pix at the beach during the summer when all the people are there, and I'm never on Dog Beach, I shoot a bit farther down the beach (closer to where bathrooms are at Ocean Dr and Ocean Ct). Here are some from last January, when the beach was empty

I too, would say that most photographers are or won't be hasseled while shooting from anywhere along the part of Coronado State Beach, that ultimately meets Nas North Islands fence. Great stuff...Is that a typical day there?
I live 3 blocks from where I was shooting last Friday, so even if I'm not at the beach I can hear everything that comes in. I've only had one other day like that before, but there IS activity most days. Weekends are pretty quiet unless there is an exercise or CQs going on. Friday was heavier than usual because of the car racing-- the Growlers did flybys and the VAQ-137 EA-6B was on static. Oh, the other thing is one runway was closed because of the cars, so every arrival came in over the beach. On a typical day there are 2 runways open so there isn't as much coming past the beach.
These Hornets came in last weekend, and they landed on runway 36, the Dog Beach runway is 29.

Thanks everyone! Friday was definitely the most active I've seen it there. But having the other runway shut down and the race that weekend was probably why.
Yep, when I heard 11/29 was the only option I figured it would be a good day to finally get out of the house. That's as good as NASNI gets. Most activity I've ever seen come down the beach, that's for sure. Unfortunately the weather only gave us a window of about an hour for decent light, during which only a couple aircraft came in. Lots of awesome stuff was in the soup though. :-X
NASNI gets some really cool stuff, but on a normal day you're kind of hosed by the runway options. You might have 30 arrivals, but only have 8 or 9 come down the beach. That's the crappy part.
Here are some of the weapon toting P-3s. First one is an AGM-84 SLAM, second one I was pretty sure was an AGM-65, but I'm puzzled by the lack of "tail fins"...

You could walk right up to them get your fingerprints all over them, whatever. Where the aircraft were you didn't need a ticket, anybody could've checked out the aircraft and/or gone on a ship tour (choice of Reagan, Arleigh Burke class USS Benfold or Canadian frigate Ottawa) for free. The fences in the pictures are between the aircraft and the area where you needed a ticket.

Here are some of the weapon toting P-3s. First one is an AGM-84 SLAM, second one I was pretty sure was an AGM-65, but I'm puzzled by the lack of "tail fins"...
what was your processing on the second shot? There's a "dreamy" look to the edges, really interesting haven't seen anything like that before on a/c pictures

My late father in law is buried in the white wall on the top of your pic. And...he served with VF-161 the Chargers during their F-4 phantom days
Took me a second to realize you meant the Nation Cemetery across the bay, VF-161 Chargers, got a patch from them.

Some recent beach landings @ NI
Nice pics Charger. I really like the one with the moon!
Thank you Stoernblom, But as you know, any kind of lunar shot is nothing short of pure luck, I did know the moon was there, but it's so much about timing and trying to keep a since of humor when you try and fail, thanks again.

Thanks Chris!
I'm not sure which day they came in on. Monday they did a fly over at the Home Run Derby. I assumed there would be a fly over at the game itself, but I figured it would be F-18s from Miramar or Lemoore. So anyway, Monday after their flyover at the Home Run Derby, I hear some jets approaching. It gets louder and louder, and I can tell these jets are NOT making the usual approach over the beach. They actually flew OVER my condo (1/2 mile from the end of the runway). We have a giant olive tree in front, so I really couldn't make out what type of jets they were, I just figured that somebody was going to get a royal @$$ chewing since jets are never allowed to fly over town. The base gets lots of noise calls even when the pilots are obeying the rules. Then, Tuesday morning, I found out the jets that flew over the house were the T-Birds. Needless to say, I was out at the beach with my camera the that night. I was afraid they would do the fly by and go straight home to Nellis, but they came back to North Island. The stadium is about 2 miles away, but you could easily see the TBirds as soon as they opened up with the smoke. I had my scanner on, and the ATC was telling them in a very stern voice that they were not allowed to overfly Pt Loma or the city of Coronado. The TBird boss comes back and asks 'where is Pt Loma?' It was pretty funny.

The Monday fly over was by 4 Super Hornets, not the T'Birds, and they didn't appear to make any hard turns like the T'birds did the following day.

A few From NI, including the new Battle cat 700
Kestrels color bird!!!! Awesome, wish she was flying star wars canyon yesterday!
Some visitor's over the weekend as Sat was the only good day to fly in.
A couple odd inbounds @ Navy NI
FYI, the Navy is doing maintenance on 29/11 so it will not be in use for the month of February, everything is using 18/36. I think this is supposed to go through mid-March, not exactly sure on the end date.
Love seeing all the different color schemes.

Damn alot of variety!!
Not enough variety. Still waiting for a F-35C. Two came out in 2016 to do the test flights off the Nimitz, but I wasn't going to spend all day/every day waiting for them to show up. Now that Lemoore has some -Cs, I'm hoping they come out for some CQs in the not too distant future.

First post in a while, and also first time seeing a couple of these A/C come into NI. The F-35C's sounded a whole lot different in the break, than anything I was use to hearing.

Awesome catch!!
Ok, question here for you. Do you know ahead of time that there are going to possible be color birds coming in, or do you just go and hang out and get lucky. I've seen some people get some awesome stuff coming through there, but in all my years visiting it is not super busy there, other than the helios.

If this was on the 10th it was for the Centennial plus 6yrs....I heard they had a closed event.
Your correct, the F-35 and the Hawkeye were taken on the 9th and as far as I knew, for a Veteran's day event, But I did know that Joker 400 and VFA-34 was in town with CVW 2 and bouncing back and forth from EC, and the Sparten was on det,.. That being said, unless there's a big Det out there, you can spend most days staring at the ocean, and, or have pure luck.
