Saw a Mercy Air 412 today with a different paint scheme.....had the side saddle tanks.
It was a Van Nuys .....do you know where that one is based ? Was it yours , the old Tennesee bird ?

Nice one Alan!
Sweet ;D
Cool! One of my friends used to fly for Alitalia... like those MD-80's! 8)

That was the 29 Palms bird, it's over at RSI at VNY for an interior mod. Mercy/AMC contracts with the USMC to provide medevac and other support out there, and they've decided they want a more "military" interior...not the fancy flying ER that it currently is! Go figure!
As the sun came up this morning....
Alan
Thanks for the info on the 29 Palms 412......two questions.....is that the new Mercy scheme or is it a one-off ?......And would you know the time frame on how long it will take to do the interior....id like to get pics before it leaves.
Thanks

Skip, Sorry I don't know the delivery date. If I hear, though, I'll let you know. That scheme was a left-over from another Air Methods program (I forget which one it came from...maybe AirLife in TX?). Actually, the Mercy scheme (which was pre-Air Methods days) was subsequently adopted for the Life Net program, and then adopted as the standard Air Methods scheme. Actually, I'm a bit surprised that 778 didn't get painted before it came out to us.
Alan
Thanks Alan.......it does look like the Texas Air-Life Scheme.
Another Mojave oddball...this Gippsland GA-8 is registered to L' Avion, the partnership between Flight Research and Gippsland that resulted in a number of the Airvans going through final assembly at Mojave rather than Australia prior to getting delivered to the Civil Air Patrol (Nadia Roberts of FRI is Canadian, hence the maple leaf on the tail).
Alan
Alan
Is that S-55 still at TPS ?
And does it ever fly ?
Skip
Hi Skip,
Yup, in fact, it was out doing engine runs the other day. AFAIK, it's only flown twice since being rebuilt after the engine fire. I'll try to dig out a pic or two tomorrow.
Alan
What do they use that old dog for.......how can it even hover during the summer up there ?
It could hardly hover down in LA on a warm day.
They use their wide variety of helos for training flight test pilots and flight test engineers on how to take data. The more unusual the aircraft, the better, to give the students a "challenge". Here's one from last July.
The first 3 of 5 F-16s for Calspans new flight test program arrived today. Here's a couple of shots, more soon on my blog.
Cool shots, Alan. ;)

Looks like a lot of fun out there. I see lots of DC-10's and that silver 747 rocks <rocker>
But it looks like they are missing some parts.
Everything over in that section of the airport is part-out / scrap. Unofficial name is the "boneyard".

A few more from a mx flight today...first was a mile final to Taxiway Charlie (helicopters are so much more fun...don't have to mess with those silly runways!). The other two are the new 1st Mojave Fighter Squadron. Ok, just kidding, they're the Calspan F-16s.
A few fun aircraft in the pattern yesterday, including a Zivko Edge 540.

Nice ones Alan, can you elaborate on the Calspan project with the F-16's. Could not find anything on internet. If you can...
I'm working on setting up an interview with one of the principals, so should know more next week.

Looking forward to it..
A couple from yesterday. Unfortunately, I had to leave to attend the Boeing X-51A media briefing before WK2 went airborne.

Not that often, maybe once every couple of weeks. The helo transient parking is right next to ours, but it's not used that much. Most of the helo activity at Mojave is from NTPS. Here's one of WK2 taxiing past their line.

I didn't realize that one was "special". QFs are common enough that I only pull the camera out when the lighting is "ideal".
Yeah it was the first QRF-4C. They have used up all the good airframes for the F-4E and F-4G so they are now converting QRF-4C's. They did test the RF when they first where going to use the Phantom for drones but started with the E's and G's first.
For Robin...NTPS BO-105 on final for taxiway charlie today
Very nice shot...... Lots of rotors , just what i like !
That is a cool shot Alan. ;)
Proteus was up again today...this time taking off from Rwy 8 due to the "backward" winds.

Me too, looks cool 8)
The last several week, it's been flying almost daily, generally leaving between 8am and 10am. Usually, with standard winds, it leaves on Rwy 12, so would be able to be shot from the south east side of the airport. I could start tweeting when I see it out on the ramp, if that would be helpful (I'm "helofixr" at tweeter).
Alan
That is one wacky looking plane......id also like to see it.
While on our way over to Cal City today, I grabbed one of Aloha's colorful Fun Bird....
Nice one Alan. I guess that's a retro scheme before they shut down?
Yeah, it was a special one-off retro scheme. I did a short article on it when it arrived at Mojave with some background info, here: http://mojaveskies.blogspot.com/2008/06/flower-power.html#links
MiG-15 N515MG showed up today and taxied over to the school. I missed the landing, unfortunately. It's been here before, for use by the students as their "final project", which is to design a flight test program for an aircraft they've never seen before. Also, and this is for Robin, one of the school's OH-58s was up. If you look close, you'll see that the front is flat black and the back is glossy...it's used as an NVG trainer, and whoever painted it actually painted flat black flames reaching back into the glossy area.

Again, nice catches. Mohave is truly one of those "you never know what you're going to get" kinds of places.
I'm curious how you guys handle flying in those wicked winds you get during the summer?
You mean those wicked winds we have right now? Actually, it's not bad at the moment, 30 kts gusting 43. We're good up to about 50 kts. Hey, that's the beauty of a helicopter...just point the nose into the wind and the machine thinks it's flying.

We always stop in Mojave throughout the summer while traveling to Reno and Mammoth. Sometimes it feels like the wind is going to take your car door off when you open it.

I'd make the drive out there just to get a shot of this one. Is there any spot I can catch a good shot of it??
If you shooting from the fence line, I'd suggest trying behind Stater Bros. (at the north end of town). The tour will take you out there, but sometimes they're ok about photography, and sometimes they're a bit anal. If I see Javier on Monday, I'll ask him.
I'm going to be rolling through Mojave tomorrow around 8 - 9am. How far away is the Aloha jet from the fence line if I am shooting from Stater Bros.? Is there anything else going on tomorrow?
It's a ways...you're going to need a long lens. I never did make it up there to check it out, but flying over the area made it look like it's a pretty clean shot from there. Our 412 is in the hangar, there's an old 222U on the line. I won't be around till 10 am, otherwise I'd invite you over for a "hi".

Sorry! Unless something breaks on the helo, I don't plan on being at work then!
One of Corporate Helo's Astars was at the school down the ramp, sporting a big HD Wescam ball. The shiny black paint sure sucks up all the light! Makes for hard shooting....

From my drive through Mojave a couple of weeks ago. Nothing great but I could tell there is a heck of a lot to shoot out there.
Quite a few Canadian birds out there but they look out of service now since no logos. I do see Alan next to the Bell 222!! ;D
I had that weird feeling that someone was watching ;D
LOL <rolf>
A few from yesterday....
My son works for a San Diego based company known as General Atomics. Any of you guys that frequent the Mojave Airport ever see any of those Predator or Reaper UAV or RPV aircraft take off or Land. My son tells me that all those flights as well as the flights in the middle east are all flown by pilots located in San Diego.
They're actually over at El Mirage, and don't get over to Mojave. The administration folks at Mojave have been lobbying for approval to operate UAVs in the airspace here, though.
My son corrected me today and stated that all UAV pilots operate the aircraft from the high desert and not in San Diego.
Mojave's monthly "Plane Crazy" open house was naturally overshadowed by the Chino events, but the turnout was decent nonetheless, and since tomorrow kicks off National EMS week, Mercy and the CHP had their helos on display (Kern Co. Sheriff and Fire were invited, but were no-shows). Biggest treat with the surprise appearance of TBM's 1957-model C-130A, ex-Tanker 64. Oh, and anyone wanna buy a slighly-used Bellanca??
Alan
Does that C-130 fly....and if it does what does it do for a living. ? Sucks they don`t firefight anymore.
Also , do you know where that CHP ASTAR is based....i havent seen that N -Number before.
The C-130A is operated by TBM on lease to ASB Avionics, the folks at MHV who are doing the Tepper avionics mods. They're also developing an improved autopilot system, and that's the current project that which is being test flown on Tanker 64. I ran some shots of it last year on my blog (http://mojaveskies.blogspot.com/2008/07/50s-flashback.html ).
The CHP bird is H-80 out of Apple Valley.
I think I need to go to Mojave <angel>
But Chino was great, a first time for me ;D

Gotta just love the Mojave flightline...
Calspan's 3 F-16s were all out of the barn, with WK2 getting ready for tomorrow's flight to NM for the Spaceport America groundbreaking
Have we figured out what the F-16 are there for or what Calspan's doing to them? Not drones since BAE is down the tarmac and around at the corner.

Burt and crew hardly ever want their stuff photographed. You get used to that after a while and just shoot away.
Looks like FlightAware is calling arrival time for back in Mojave today at 10:41, smack-dab in the middle of today's Plane Crazy fly-in and car show! Should make for some good pics...
Mark today down as WK2's airshow debut (I believe they'd been billing Oshkosh as the debut). Kinda ironic how things were handled in Phoenix, with such an emphasis on "no pictures". WK2 showed up high overhead at about 11am, slowly circled down, and then, very unexpectedly, did a low pass right down Rwy 26, in front of the crowd. They circled around for a second low pass down 30, then landed and taxied right in front of the crowd...
Hmm...shoulda attached the pics to the above post...

Yeah, A-300, the second TNT airbus in for storage. Word is that up to 5 may come, for year-long storage.
I thought that the A-300's only had 2 engines... ???
LOL Im sorry I thought there was 2 engines on the left wing hahaha <laughing>

Masten Space's Xombie for the X-Prize Lunar Lander Challenge (didn't do the 2nd flight, so today didn't count. First flight was fantastic, though!)

Crewmembers said that they're out from Baltimore for imaging tests over the China Lake range, and were using Mojave as a fueling point; they're overnighting at PMD, with a similar schedule for Sunday. The aircraft is testing some of the JSF F-35 radar and ISR systems.
Nice catch Alan. That nose is UGLY. Surprised it does not look like an F-35 nose like the F-22 looking one on Voodoo1.
Hey Alan, can ya help me out with this one? I shot this the morning I began driving to the Fallon show.

Man! how can that thing fly with one engine?
Real cool pic's, Alan. ;)

Sweet ;)

More on the gimballing...watch this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaXW5TaFwAE&fmt=22 by my friend Mike Massee. Towards the end of the flight, as it's descending, you can see how much the nozzle moves to keep things upright.
Niiiiice! Thanks for sharing that video, Alan. <cheers> ;)
Looks like NTPS has replaced their wrecked Turbo Dak. This is the former ZS-MAP, which visited Oshkosh in 2008.
Forgot to post these last Tuesday...the Toyota TA-1 made a very rare appearance on the ramp. Currently powered by a Lyc.
Got to work earlier than necessary this morning, so grabbed the Nikon and a cup of coffee and watched the sun rise over ASERCA's "newest" DC-9.
Great shot, like to dawn colors. <thumbsup>
NWA used to have 80 or so of those DC-9, put a ton of hours on them and flew them almost every where. Not suprised to see some of them sitting around waiting for the crusher.

This one, N615NW, actually is gonna live on. ASERCA bought a number of them, several of them have already flown to Venezuela, this one's due to leave for there Friday. On the other hand, the rest of ASERCA's, 5 I think, are gonna get parted out. They had originally planned on putting them back in service, but the politics down there have pretty much squashed that idea. Anyway, This morning was yet another great sunrise, so here are some more pics. The MD-80 is Alitalia I-DAWU, and it is getting parted out.
N615NW...the DC-9 that kicked our butts today. On the second take-off pic, note the thick stream of fuel venting from the right wing-tip. It turned around and came back b/c of a gear unsafe light. Swung the gear and no problem noted. Finally left after dusk.
Looks like more great weather out there today ;)
Another gorgeous sunrise today...so here's a set of the "artwork" with a pair of SWA 737s as "models". I've deliberately not tweaked colors, contrasts, or anything in Photoshop...these are as-taken.
Where were you yesterday when I needed you? Aaaaaaaahhhhh!
Great shots by the way.

Well, I guess wanted would be more of the word. Was kinda trolling in Voyager during breakfast to see if anyone would let me out on the ramp to get the F-16s and the SWA. No luck. Will post some shots today.

Should have just come down to the FTA hangar, where I work, and where the SWA 737s are.

Next time I'm up there, definately will. We rolled up about 5:30am and the station started getting antsy we were taking so long to get out of there so there wasn't much time to dork around and shoot photos.

Very good reason... work which is very fortunate as I'll have a BIG bucks for rental car bill plus repair bill when I get back from seeing Katrina at Randolph this weekend. :-[
So was the L-1011 on a test flight and whats the status on the F-100's now. They don't look to sealed up for storage out there.

L1011 was a crew proficiency flight, and the F-100s are pretty much dead in the water. We don't have any test programs on the horizon that would call for them, and they would need some major inspections to get them flying again. It's hard to be out on the speedline and NOT grab a shot or two of them when I can!
Caught the moon just at the right moment....

Rumor is that WK2/SS2 will be doing its first captive carry flight early Monday morning...I won't be able to be out there, but it is one of "historical" moments that shouldn't be missed! It was supposed to be last Friday, but scrubbed for avionics issues.
Just a quick question, how often do the F-4s go up out there?

Rather infrequently, actually. No way to predict. They do FCFs and delivery flights. Maybe once or twice a month...

Poking around Mojave yesterday. Too chicken to get out and shoot over the fence.
Damon - Decided not to shoot the Orbital L-1011. Those signs are a pretty good deterrent.
In case anyone is interested, Guest Speaker for Saturday's Plane Crazy at Mojave is renown aviation writer Barry Schiff. As always, the event is free. For those who missed last month's PCS, with speaker Dick Rutan, you missed a real treat, hearing him tell stories from his days as a MISTY in 'Nam.

Saw Barry Shiff at the event at the Domiguez Adobe and it woudl have been cool to heard Dick Rutan... Somebody should video tape it. I know they do at Western Museum of Flight, a Senior film crew records it and it takes about 6 months or so, but its recorded and I think they volunteer to do it.
Look who showed up at Plane Crazy Saturday!

Just looking through Flickr, Swift Air operated this plane in 2011 (though it appears to have been at Mojave undergoing upgrades/refurbishment since the end of that year).
