I loves me some Pt Mugu. Too bad they don't have a jet team. I'll be there anyway... its been sad the last few years that they haven't had a show. 2007 was killer.

Vapor Fest <yum>
I was told at Cable that the Sept date has been moved to August, as the Moffet Field show cancelled and Mugu was able to get the Thunderbirds on that date. I have not seen any confirmation of this......yet. Stay tuned.

That would be sweet!! If they get the T-birds, I might have to make the 350 mile round trip to the show.

After being there in the past, I'd never miss it. Incredible vapor, and an awesome base to get a chance to visit.
I had a flightline tour back in the mid-90s when I was in JROTC, I was one of 2 from my unit that attended a future military leadership conference and Pt Mugu was one of the stops. Test P-3s, F-14s and A-6s taxiing all around us, the Tomcats were taking off in burner. I wish I was into photography back then... Test squadron Intruders and Tomcats... Would have been killer photo ops.

Nice im so ready for this one 8) >:D.........
Weak lineup of military flying. If I'm not working I'm planning on going one of the days.
I'll be at the Pt. Mugu show for sure. Hopefully it will be an awesome "Vaporfest". <tcat>
This is my first time going to Point Mugu and I am really looking forward to it.
Even though The Thunderbirds will be there. I am a true blue fan.
"Blue Angels Rule" <blueangels>
Yeah this one's gonna be weak indeed. Of course nothing can top the 2007 Vaporfest, but hopefully we'll still see a little bit come off the A-10 like last time, of course the Bug will show some, some of the Tbird passes, and well I was hoping the rumored B-2 pass would be a photo pass and that might see some vapes, but it's not listed anywhere officially. I've got the assignment from World Airshow News for this one, but if I didn't have that, I'd only go one day. Hopefully some of the statics will be color birds.
Hotel booked, I'm ready ;D
Very weak. I'm bummed out. We've been waiting three years since we were amazed by vaporfest 07 and this is what we get? :( Not even a Superbug. No Raptor and no Strike Eagle. :(
The Firecat is a good act, and the 130J MAFFS demo will be cool. Obviously the Legacy Hornet and Warthog are cool, but I don't know if it's drive 140 miles cool. Oh well, I did swear I would be there if they had a show... I guess I should have put stipulations on that oath. <laughing>
I will be going to the show as well. <rocker>
Bloodhound 700 should be on static, with what it cost to paint it, it better damn well be.
I wonder if they're going to be toolbags and not let people shoot arrivals from the missile park? It'll be funny to see everyone out in the fields.
I'll be there on Sunday
Scott
Frankly, I'm looking forward to seeing the civis who don't get out here much.
Also, that L-1011 would be a nice static.

It took off and landed at Mugu.
Being a Boeing company effort and not a US Military program, I doubt it will show up.
But we can always hope!

Have fun at this one guys for me. The wife will be about 8.5 months pregnant at the time, so probably not the best time to make a 175 mile trek up the coast. Get some good ones for me. ;)

Yes, our Ventura Crew went out there to do a preview story. The T-Birds had to delay their arrival by 2 hours because of the weather and the media rides were cancelled. But in the background of one of their interviews, you could see the lineup of VX-30 aircraft.
Of course, the spelled "Mugu" wrong throughout the story:

Guess i will stick around till they kick me out then.. depending on how foggy it is...
The latest weather report I heard this morning was "Maybe a
couple hours of sun at the coast in the afternoon"
Is there a website about directions to the airshow, best routes, when to arrive, what to bring?
I only ask b/c this is the 2nd airshow I'm attending. The first airshow @ 2009 Edwards AFB was an absolute traffic nightmare where the last 10 miles took 4 hours. Are they all like that, or was the Edwards one poorly planned?

That's Edwards for you.

Sungoban, attached is my best guess of the layout based on what they have done in the past. If you enter the base from Las Posas, (if you dirve up on PCH or cut over from the 101 freeway) you will likely be parked on the ramp; those entering from Wood Road (coming in from the North) will likely be parked on the eastern part of Runway 9.
If you want to avoid traffic, plan to come very early (gates reportedly open at 8 AM) and leave late (about an hour or so after the Thunderbirds land *or* when they start kicking you off the field). An excellent time to get out of Dodge is just before the T-Birds start the demo; the tradeoff is that you will a) miss the demo and b) miss all the people planning to leave as the demo completes. Your choice.
Another thought on traffic - the airfield is basically accessed by two four-lane roads (giving you maybe three lanes with flow control, necking down to one or two lanes). Las Posas is two-lane from the 101 freeway as is Wood Road. PCH is two-lane in parts coming up from Malibu. There will be traffic congestion, your job is to plan and avoid it.
The weather will be a crapshoot. Plan for a foggy misty morning with the marine layer burning off by 2 PM ish (maybe). If it does burn off, there will likely be a low deck over the coastline. Remember, the over run for Runway 3 is about 50 yards from the surf. Show center is probably less than 6000 feet North of the beach. For what it's worth, we had bright, cloudless sunlight from 7 to 7:30 PM last night. Current conditions near Mugu may be characterized as cloudy bright (F5.6 weather if you remember your Kodak instructions...)
I like weather underground because they give you the dew point and the temp.
I think fog occurs when the tempo is within 2-4 deg of the dewpoint.

Saturday I left beforeurn in the T-Birds and was the only one on the road.
Sunday, probably 20 minutes from the time I got in the car till I got off the base. Once I made it off base, all the traffic just disappeared.
Eric, those are fantastic. I'll be posting some tonight after work. For my first time, it was decent show. It wasn't even close what it used to be like back in the day, but I actually enjoyed the statics more than I did the flying action.

This is what you get from Canon shooters.. They just don't know where to point the camera...
Naaaa Erick we know what we shoot, not like Nikon boys that just waste their memory cards ;) <canon>

Vapors are great, but even with vapor, a grey airplane, against a a grey sky, looks like crap.

I know and I agree, but I'd rather spend an entire afternoon waiting for clear skies at a humid location, than spend a day in the desert getting blue sky shots of tac demos that resemble spotting photos due to no vapor. :-\

Hey guys,
Just found this forum. Nice work. I'm still culling my shots from yesterday, but here's a quickie F/A-18:

Looks like most of the primary shots have been covered, but here are a few of mine.....
BTW, Bloodhound 700 was never grounded due to a wing crack. There were some P-3s in the fleet that were being checked for that, but BH 700 has been doing fine, according to the VX-30 people I asked about it. Looks like somebody got their P-3s crossed w their S-3s, lol. They have three Vikings at the moment, two of which are in depot maintenance back East, and are expecting to get a fourth a/c in the future. One was an ex-NASA bird, another an ex-"Checkmates" bird.
Another batch for tonight...........

WoW! Very impressive shots, Britt! <thumbsup>
Nice shots Britt!! I think your the only one that caught the Flame-out
Excellent photo and timing! For what it's worth that was probably what we'd call a "pop-stall" - a momentary distortion of airflow in the engine (resulting in the over-rich mixture - i.e., flames). A non-recoverable engine stall (flameout) or what the airline types boringly call "surge" would have lead the pilot to terminate the demo and take an early landing. It would be morbidly interesting to take a look at the TEMS data download after the flight, particularly the hi-res data to see the stall.
By the way, the photo also shows the inner wing slats deployed (and the vapor) - they were added to the YA-10 to help prevent engine stall at high angles of attack as you see here.
Man! That T-Bird shot is stunning!
Great shots Britt and thanks Craig for the info!
Thanks everyone! And thank you for the info! I knew the basic reason of what caused the flame, but I always thought it was called a flame-out. Interesting to know!
And GREAT photos everyone!
Finally finished editing all mine.

At Miramar last year, I was talking with one of the VFA-125 pilots, and I asked him about the Marines on one side and Navy on the other. He looked at me like I was from another planet, looked at one side of the plane, walked over and looked at the other and said "Huh, I actually never noticed that before."

We talked to a trainee Gladiator at NAFEC last year that didn't seem to actually care much about flying. Couldn't believe it.
Finally had a few hours to go through my pics. Here's a few a like

Hello Mr. Addison. The reason why VFA-125 "Rough Raiders" has Navy and Marines written on each side is because the squadron trains pilots to fill F/A-18 billets throughout the United States Marine Corps and Navy. Technically speaking VFA-125 is a training squadron. Also you'll see VMFAT-101 Sharpshooters with Navy on one side and Marines on the other. Here is a Wikipedia link on VFA-125:

BTW, Bloodhound 700 was never grounded due to a wing crack. There were some P-3s in the fleet that were being checked for that, but BH 700 has been doing fine, according to the VX-30 people I asked about it. Looks like somebody got their P-3s crossed w their S-3s, lol.
Asked my Dad again today, who
works at VX-30. He says BH700
was grounded for a month, to the point the guys around the squadron were jokingly calling it "The Museum Piece."
And he works specifically on the P-3s. He knows his P-3s from his S-3s, trust me.
He thinks the guys at the airshow were towing the Navy "line", so to speak.
A whole bunch of awesome pictures in this thread. I'm going to try to add a few here (I hope they aren't too redundant)! :)
I think we should call the -60 "Rudolph" (the Red Nosed)...
Sure does look like Rudolph. I actually wanted to take that cover off. I was thinking the same thing.

Some will remember I was trying to figure out who the General was I saw walking around on Sat.

It wouldn't be all that bad. You would get to see many places from a different perspective, meet a lot of interesting people, play with all the coolest toys, look like a hot shot wherever you go..... I dare say you'd have the time of your life. As for joining the Air Force, who knows?
I couldn't resist ;D
