Excellent photo and timing!  For what it's worth that was probably what we'd call a "pop-stall" - a momentary distortion of airflow in the engine (resulting in the over-rich mixture - i.e., flames).  A non-recoverable engine stall (flameout) or what the airline types boringly call "surge" would have lead the pilot to terminate the demo and take an early landing.  It would be morbidly interesting to take a look at the TEMS data download after the flight, particularly the hi-res data to see the stall.

By the way, the photo also shows the inner wing slats deployed (and the vapor) - they were added to the YA-10 to help prevent engine stall at high angles of attack as you see here.

 Thanks everyone! And thank you for the info! I knew the basic reason of what caused the flame, but I always thought it was called a flame-out. Interesting to know!
