My ext hd just won't work and it still had photos on it.  :'(  Alltech is here in Lomita, any suggestions on where to take to get recovered or fixed?  I am going to get a 1tb asap.

Try best buy if all else fails.

Also any suggestions on brands?  Cnet has higher reviews than the actual ones but the users.  All a bit confusing.

I only use seagate, western digital and maxtor when I build my systems. They seem to be the best.

What kind of external hard disk did you have?

phantomphan1974

A Maxtor. It makes a tic tic sound.  Alltec said it was time for a new one and out $100-$300 to recover data  :o

That?s evil! I only had one hard disk go bad out of about 15. The one that went bad was similar. I kept booting it as an external, and when it stabilized I copied everything.

Will keep checking.  Computer does not even see it.  I disconnected it now but will try again soon.

Thanks Robert.

After that experience, every thing I save is copied to at least 3 drives. 1 main and 2 externals.  The drive that boots windows XP pro, I do not store anything on. You can get into trouble with this too if windows goes south.

I bought 2 Seagate 650GB hard drives. They will become my backup drives. I used the Maxtor 320 GB drives for the last year and they worked great. As with everything, they fill up.

All external hard disks that I have were built, not store bought.

Thanks Robert.

It could be the case that the external hd is in that is having problems, power supply etc. You could try and mount the drive in a different case. If the hd spins up, you should be able to get the data off of it. Many things to try.

Thanks.  You build your externals drives? Is that what you mean?
