President Obama is going to be on the Tonight Show w/Jay Leno on Thursday and according to reports, landing at Long Beach at 3pm. But I know from others that that is probably not the most accurate time.

Cool, security is too tight with the president. It would be impossible to take good pic's. :-\
Maybe on the other side of freeway or closer to the flightpath if known. I have to work, so putting it out there for anyone interested (CHILIBEAN?)
Would be great to get some shots of Air Force One ;D
Or for us Rotorheads....MARINE One......
Honestly, Cal State Long Beach gives you good shots with gear down on approach.
There should be no problems there on campus.
Depending on the spot, you can get a bottom shot too.

Im really not that into the Presidential Helicopters but because its so hard to do i want to get some REALLY good pics.....unlike Damon who fell into the jackpot catching the VH-53E.
Back in 2000 they had the VH-3D in the hanger at Los Alamitos and let me and a friend look at it from about 30 ft away.....i was shocked they let us that close.

You can get anything from a side view to a bottom. Lots of parking lots on the west side of campus. Very open campus to the flightpath into KLGB.
Now that I think about it, the west side structures are better, but I don't know when they bounce from staff parking to general parking.
I think anyone that would try the usual spots at KLGB would be crazy to do it. Too bad- b/c there are some nice spots to see planes. It's not worth the headache for me personally.

Great shots and EVERYONE BEWARE!!!
Are you saying they went to your house ?....
yes they did...they came here and went thru things along with my computer made phone calls to family members :(
Thats not to good.....what gives them any right to enter your home...did they tell you that ?
Man! Awesome catches!! They made calls to your family?? I think I'll stay clear of Long Beach for a bit.

Is it legal to take them from your home? ie backyard, Roof, etc. .....

There is a C-17A Globemaster III parked at Building 98 in front of the B-1B Bomber that arrived earlier in the day.
Boeing C-17A Globemaster III 03-3118 (P-118) arrived at 1:50pm. The plane departed at 2:40pm.
A Marine Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion landed on 25L at 7:20pm and parked on the Boeing C-17 ramp. The helicopter was towed to the C-17 paint shop where two other Marine CH-53E's are parked. Something is going on.
JetBlue Airways A320-232 N768JB came in tonight and still does not have a name on the nose of the airplane.
i didnt read that till i came home today =( I heard a rumbling today too that sounded different from the normal jetliners =( but i was stuck in class
just saw this thread.
I dont think they can go into your house and search you unless they give you a warrant.
When it comes down to presidential stuff, I think they can do whatever they want for the presidents safety.

Man, great pix. You scored :o But yes, be careful of the US Government. With the way the world is now they can pretty much do what they need to do to protect the country. I would stay a distance from LB if trying to get photos. That's why Canon makes the 800mm lens with the 2x teleconverter ::)

What kind of lens you going to use? 1000mm with 2x converter? I get the impression he is landing at LBG, but not 100%.
LoL I wish I had a 1000mm but I don't think he is going to be landing at LGB. I'm pretty sure it might be LAX and if its there I will use my 300mm or I might use my friends 400mm. Also.. What about the white tops? I wanna take some pics of those helo's :)

News is saying today at 3?? Thought it was gonna be tomorrow? TFRs have been filed for today too.
I still think Signal Hill would be the best bet. Least likely place to get in trouble for shooting. Minimum lens 300mm imo. The panorama of LGB in the Long Beach - LGB (http://www.apsocal.com/index.php/topic,174.msg1370.html#msg1370) thread was taken from Signal Hill with my 100-300mm.

Just took a look at flightaware and noticed a 737-800 flying to LGB from Andrews AFB, just departed, should be in around 11:55AM according to flightaware. Maybe the presscore? Flight number BSK3000.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BSK3000
Only thing of interest on flightaware for today.
LoL the only thing huh.. I've never seen a 747 land at LGB.. :S
Is he even coming north of Long Beach for anything. Good luck to anyone going to day and beware of your surroundings.
Got this link off the AF1 thread on Fencecheck.
http://www.longbeach.gov/airport/about/filming_n_photography.asp (http://www.longbeach.gov/airport/about/filming_n_photography.asp)
Thats probably the back-up AF1 that always goes.
Yeah I think I'm going to stay away from LGB lol.. I don't want to invite them over my house.
I'm taking a half-day and going for it. I heard on the radio he's scheduled to land at 3 at Long Beach. I'll either be at CSULB or somewhere off Los Coyotes Diagonal or Clark south of the 405. I figure CSULB is a good bet since you can blend in with the students instead of waiting somewhere on the street with a big white or black lens.
Haha yeah that true.. Good luck all! ;)
I'm up on a hill in Pedro, and I can usually see all the way to Signal Hill, but there is heavy, heavy fog in the area, if it doesn't burn off, which I'm sure it will, don't expect anything good. Can't see past 100ft right now. I'll grab some shots to give an idea.
Wow! Yeah that's not good :( I hope it burns off.
I'm sure there will be a significant burn-off by 3. Today is suppose to be the hottest day of the week. Well, at least that's what I'm hoping for...
Yeah I'm sure it will. But some crazy fog. When I made the first post I could at least see over the fog to the mountains, now I can't see jack.

Got a static shot along with the 737-800 that came out of Andrews from Signal Hill. Didn't have time to go over to the fence near her, but there were quite a few people over there so it doesn't seem as restricted as one would imagine. She should be there until tomorrow, departure time unknown.
So far you are the only one from the group that has a shot of AF1. Great shots Josh! ;) <apscs> <thumbsup>
Whew! I made it back from what turned out to be a longer outing than expected. I made it to Long Beach around 2 p.m. and drove around a bit to come up with my best guess at what would be a good spot to catch AF-1. I settled on a little park just west of CSULB. It's on the north side of Atherton across from Whaley Park. AF-1 was right on time and I was able to pick up some pretty decent shots.
I was driving away to try and catch the motorcade when I noticed 3 Presidential CH-53's and 2 Night Hawks heading South. I figured Obama flew to Costa Mesa instead of drove so I made my way over to the fairgrounds. Sure enough, all 5 helos were in the parking lot. The area was locked down pretty tight so getting any type of shot was extremely difficult. I drove around a bit and found a decent spot to shoot from. All I could get was the 53's through some trees. The Night Hawks were completely obscured from view.
The saving grace was capturing the departure. Not the best, but worth the effort.
Photos coming soon...

Thanks, Skip!
If you look at shots of the VH-60, they seem to leave the step down when they fly. Is there a reason for that?
I have no idea....maybe they forgot ? Or maybe they keep em down for a while in case they have an emergency landing.
What is stenciled on the tail? Is it the designation? Not sure where the LA townhall meeting is but that is today prior to Tonight Show w/Jay Leno.....

Cool :o
I though Nixon used to land at MCAS El Toro, Being he was the Command in Chief, he could land anywhere AF-1 could land. E.T. would have been 30 miles closer to what was then the Western White House in San Clemente.
One of the presidents landed at Los Al, maybe Kennedy, not sure. But my dad would see all kinds of stuff gone in there. He use to work at Mitsubishi on Katella and is in the approach path. Never got to go over there and hang out and take shots......
Wanted to share this.... :o

Id suggest you keep a portfolio of 8x10s you shot when your taking plane pics. If the cops bug you show em the pics and that should be that.....they must know people like Airplanes and 99.999999 percent of them are are harmless photo nerds.
Ive never ever been talked to.....and ive been plenty of secure places where you would think they would at least ask.
I really don`t get it.
Sounds like a good idea Skip.. ;)

Sounds like a great idea. I know some photogs at LAX do just that.
