They are always cool. This is something everyone should see 8)
I believe Julie Clark will be there as well.
Are you sure about those dates? The FAQ page only lists the 17th. http://www.edwards.af.mil/questions/topic.asp?id=812
I think that was posted before they cut the show down to only one day. It was initially going to be the usual two-day show.
update: B-25 Pacific Prowler will be on display.

Nice ;)
Ooo..... :) All three bombers are scheduled to fly - gotta keep the fingers cross for a formation of all three together. (They've done it once before). Looks like a pretty good show, was suprised to see the F-22 demo team listed (certainly not a complaint of course, lol), since the closest date to the west coast on the ACC schedule has been the Holloman show's date.
If I remember right, the security screening, as far as camera bags go, was pretty similar to Miramar's. Except LONGER lines.
Can't wait <rob>
I'm thinking about getting a room the night before so I don't have to make that drive in the morning. Anyone interested?

Leaving at 3 in the morning is a great time to go >:D
Wow, we'll get to see a three-ship bomber flight!! That's worth going by itself!

Yep <rob>
Now, the question begs, what about camera bag backpacks?
I've had bad experiences with Edwards and the security and the past. One year took nearly 4 hours from the time we got on base till the time I walked onto the flightline. Missed most of the show sitting in traffic.
And if memory serves, all the flying is backlit.
Sounds like Miramar on Saturday.
I haven't had any problems at Miramar. I usually park off base and walk in, and go to the easternmost gate. Seems to be less people trying to come in that way.
F-35 AA-1 has arrived at Edwards AFB.
She has completed flying at Fort Worth and is now at Edwards AFB for arrestor-hook testing before heading to China Lake to end her career in live-fire testing. Its 2.8h flight to Edwards on Spe. 10 was the first F-35's 90th flight - making up the majority of JSF flying to date.
The 2009 Edwards Air Show may still hold a treat in store yet!

As usual this should be a fun show, except for the long bus lines when you exit (even if you hang out for a while after the show ends)!
Everyone speakup, who is going?
Negative, I will not be joining the festivities. :-[
I won't be able to go either... :(
Is this a back lit show?
I'll be there!
I'll be there, too. Really no excuse for me not to go, it's in my backyard pretty much. And yes this IS a backlit show, sorry.
ill be at this one also
I'm planning on being there just to see F-35 AA-1 before the upcoming live fire testing at China Lake.

I have a travel assignment the weekend before and was terrified I mixed up the weekends. Short of LA burning down, am planning to be there, but going to leave at like 5am.
Ok change of plans... Im in for this one! ;D <cheers> Still gonna wait for a response from whoever is in charge of the Media Registrations. :-\ I dont know how this works... first time for me. :-[

The many air shows I've shot with credentials, usually there's a pen set up for credentialed media, sometimes it's worth it sometimes not.
Back in the day at Mugu, one year we got to go out nearly all the way to the runway, which was cool, and other year we were on the rood of the fire station, which was also cool.

Hey Josh, you can ride up with me but you need to meet me in OC if that okay. What day were you planning leaving?
Waiting to hear back from the media guy about credentials. Emailed him again to see if they're a go or not.
If I get the credentials (Funny, I'm the one guy here who actually works for the media) I want to go to the media day on Friday and will probably stay the night up there.
If not, I'm hitting the road no later than 6am on Saturday if not earlier.

??? Dude, print media is just as much media as broadcast...you'd be surprised at how many of us here <i>are</i> at least part time media; right now I'm more like full-time. Of the cadre up here in the high desert, every one of us has our work regularly published. What's great about APSoCal is that everyone tends to treat everyone as equals. Some of the guys here are still learning photography...great! What better place to do so than to rub shoulders with guys who do it for a living, without feeling intimidated. I hope you didn't mean it that way, but your comment came off a bit arrogant...you might want to reconsider it.
It wasn't meant to be arrogant, and sorry if it was taken that way, but I have credentials from across Southern California and thought it was funny I was having problems getting a pass for the show.

Where is a good cheap motel/hotel that is close ?
Obviously, nothing quite close to Edwards. I'd definitely say be careful on how cheap you go in Lancaster/Palmdale for a motel. Might be worth the extra $$ to get a bit nicer place.

There are several "cheap" ones in Rosamond, which makes them 10 minutes from the gate. I'll get phone #s on the way home from work today.

been looking around just now and found a few places, but not cheap.
Mostly in Lancaster
Holiday inn Express
Courtyard Marriott
Oxford Suites
Best Western
Ok, maybe not that "cheap". A place where your car will be there in the morning and you don't need to bring weapons to sleep with.
What about motel 6 -$46.00 / friday night
WK2 will fly...cool!

I shot there in '06 as media. We had an issue at the west gate when the guards wanted things done one way, while John had already set everything up. Held us all up at the gate for quite awhile, I don't remember if that was the Wed or Friday though.
Morning all and Hi. Just joined, but some of you know me from FC. Work has had me pretty busy so not a lot of shooting lately. Did make Miramar and got the day off from work, so should make Edwards. Hope to see some of you there.
Chet
Question, where do most of you hang out at Edwards? Would like to meet everyone.
Chet
Quick tourist note here. :D
Off Ave G from the 14 Freeway, turn west and, in only about 4 miles (in the left lane) you'll be treated to one of the very few musical roads in the world. Round trip to and from the freeway should be about 15 minutes or so.
Hint... unless you get up to 70mph or better it kind of sounds like a funeral hymn (I should know).
Disclaimer: It really sounds great at 90mph but be advised, the speed limit is around 55mph so you're on your own! ;D
It that the one from the Honda commercials??

No. They did the Honda one closer into town, and residents complained about the noise, so they paved over it. Then folks complained that something really unique to our town was lost, so they relocated it to Ave G.

There is a modest sized media area, but a lot of us like to shoot from a spot further west. You can of course, shoot within the crowd, but if you're gonna do that, get in early and I'd recommend doing what Jim does - bring caution tape and rope off an area for yourself.
I have not yet shot from the tower, but I'd imagine it's probably a superb viewpoint, of course there's no guarantee of what you'll see when you're up there though. I'd love to be up there when the bombers come by!

As for Saturday, I'm thinking of just shooting from the crowd line at the usual place unless something changes ;)
Just found out I am on the 'standby' list for Friday, so there's hope yet for me, lol............
From today...
C-130 AMP w/glass cockpit... The airframe is a C-130H2
F-16 ACAS (in the foreground) which was in a NASA hangar with some other nice airframes.
F-35
If anybody forgets any equipment or needs more cards while up this way, there's a photo shop in Lancaster. King Photo Supply is west of Sierra Hyw at 749 West Lancaster Blvd (between Fig and Fern Avenues). ;)
Also, while in the NASA hanger...
The F-15 ACTIVE which is being readied for static.
The F-16 Cranked Arrow (XL) from a different angle. :)
Great shots Jim ;)
Thanks! :)
REALLY looking forward to tomorrow. Is a tripod/monopod suggested or will some of the aircraft in hanger be out side tomorrow I wonder.
I would imagine that the F-35 might be hangared as they still want to keep people from shooting the rear of the aircraft.
Just heard from John. If you're coming to Media Day tomorrow, be at the Century Circle parking lot to check in and get your media pass prior to 8 am, then meet up at the museum. The group will then leave together to watch the rehearsal activities.
Great shots Jim. Are you standing on something or using a lifted monopod?

You get the pass at Edwards. You just need to know if you are on the list. I would keep emailing or maybe someone can give you his number?
My plan is Friday, and if it turns out there's something missing like what happened at Miramar, I may stay for Saturday.
Plan is to head out from Thousand Oaks (Staying at my Parent's for the week to avoid the 405 disaster to and from work in the rain) about 6am and hopefully at the gate no later than 8:30a
Oh and I'm in for pizza regardless of whether I stay for Sat or not.

Managed to get on via a duplicate registration! <thumbup> See ya there tomorrow.
So what's on the schedule for Fri? South Base AND static walk/rehearsal viewing? Or did they do South Base on Wed as well as the F-35/NASA bit?

You could have stayed for pizza and STILL gotten stuck in that traffic. I was at a dead stop at 9:30pm on the 405. Now that they've created that new bottleneck, it's seriously time to find a new way home.

Any APSoCal-ers shoot from South Base today?
I've waited a long time to get this much of a bank angle on a B-2! Shot from the tower.

I was over on the south base on Saturday. Did you get any shots that show a small
brown car with a yellow and black umbrella behind it?
Nice meeting you at Round Table on Friday.
Here's a couple showing the view from IN FRONT OF the announcer's stand........... >:D Plus a few pyro shots.

Over at aircraftresourcesenter.com, a couple people are saying it's heading to China Lake for live fire testing for about 3 weeks.
Zeke turns and burns...........
Nailed my best P-38 photo pass shot on Sat.........here's some B-2 and Tora stuff as well.
Another batch.........quick question, where did most of you with media passes have to park? I managed to get in the 1414 lot right behind John and one other person, but I only saw a handful of others come in behind us, and heard later they changed where everyone was being sent.
Awesome shots from everybody! Seeing all these spectacular shots makes me even more upset that I couldn't make it this year. :P Maybe next time!
Nice shot of me Glen! :)
Nice hanging with you all on Friday. Here are a few ground statics
and some of my air shots
and a few more with one more static of the F-35
Last two for now
Some Tora stuff + various flybys
Great shots everyone ;D

White Knight 1........
I went Sat only.
My day was like this:
1. Leave Long Beach at 5:15 am
2. Arrive 2 miles from ED West gate at 7:10 am, park car in line. (Gates opened at 7:20ish I later heard)
3. Park car on lakebed FINALLY at 9:15ish am. (Find nearest porta potty in record time)
4. Arrive at F-35 at 9:45 am and start shooting
5. Shoot show all day
6. Get kicked out of hanger w/ rest of public after shooting F-35 at 5:30 pm
7. Get stuck in traffic forever on the lakebed.
8. 6:40 pmish - Get stuck even further (still on lakebed) when they decide to tow the X-47B mockup, F-35 AA-1, and Global Hawk back to hangers.
9. 7:00ish - Traffic is finally let go to exit base.
9. Exit Edwards Main Gate at 7:15 pm
10. Get home around 9:45 pm.
Long day. But worth it.

Took a look and it's actually two video cameras. One is a Sony.. no baloney! :D
I have a hunch about him using the two mounted together. I'm betting that one is set to wide angle and he manually controlled the zoom of the other.
Back when I was shooting video, I went to Home Depot and got a bar. Drilled out the holes where I wanted them and then mounted three SVHS video cameras to it. I mounted that to a tripod.
I sighted all cameras, zoomed all the way in, on a far away point. Then, I brought on back for wide angle, left the other zoomed in and manually operated the zoom on the third.
This way, when I cut the videos together, I had three focal lengths to choose from and intercut. All done with one operator (me) and one tripod. ;)
Nice, I remember Chilli telling me that the pilot had a camera. ;)
