Here's a large panorama of the C-17 Plant at Long Beach.
C-17's tail codes indicate Hickam AFB, 15th AW.
Nice photo Josh! ;)

Old pressure test molds.
Larry Flynt's, of Hustler Magazine, Gulfstream IV at LGB.
A few more images.
In order:
A shot showing the old C-17 molds along with an unknown DC-9, MD-80, 90... Or even a 95? Hard for me to tell from that distance.
Old Fly DC Jets sign.
C-17 plant hangar sign.
Charleston C-17 near LGB tower.
Did a little searching and found this article from Boeing regarding what will happen with the Fly DC Jets sign. I was told it was going to be sold off, but not according to this. :)
Quote from: Boeing
Commercial Airplanes presence to continue in Long Beach
Boeing Commercial Airplanes has an important presence in Long Beach, Calif., that will continue after the 717 ceases production in spring 2006: the support for all McDonnell Douglas–heritage in-service airplanes, including the 717.
Managed by Commercial Aviation Services, the support activities include technical customer support, inventory and warranty management, and spares. The CAS Long Beach team also provides technical expertise for freighter conversions and airplane modifications such as avionics and interior upgrades.
The Commercial Airplanes complex in Long Beach consists of the Douglas Center office complex and the 717 program and assembly buildings. Following 717 shutdown activities, the 717 assembly buildings and land will be transitioned to Boeing Realty. However, the Douglas Center office complex will continue to be home to the CAS team.
Boeing and Boeing Realty will ensure that monuments to the Long Beach aircraft-building heritage will be proudly displayed in the Douglas Park development, to be built on previously vacated land, across from the current Commercial Airplanes Long Beach complex. Such visible icons as the large neon "Fly DC Jets" sign are destined to become an integral part of the Douglas Park Community area development.
They are old pressure test molds.
Nice shots Josh and Skip!

Nice shot without that many people.
At approximately 1:35 p.m., two F-18 fighter jets landed at LB Airport. Due to the prevailing winds, the Airport was operating in reverse conditions as the jets arrived. Under reverse conditions, aircraft arrivals and departures occur in a north-south direction, from Carson Street towards Spring Street. The two arriving jets were instructed to circle and then land from the north. We have been advised that these two jets will depart and return back to LB Airport before 7:00 p.m. Please note that the airport is not given advance notice on military operations <tcat>
So what's up with the B-1B, still there??

Yup, I saw them too while fishing off of Long Beach. I also saw a Piaggio Avanti, a UH-60, HBPD's MD 520N, and Southwest Airline's Maryland One. A lot flying around Long Beach today.
while driving to school, i did see a UH-60 flying pretty low over the Seal Beach Naval Weapon Center or whatever its called.
I have seen that UH-60 fly over my house a few times.
I saw this late yesterday evening and was like ??? till I read this!

It's all good Keith glad i could help out.
Nice Pics Of the Marine Corp Hornets.
Nice catches Keith! And nice recruiting too of C 17 George.
Great catches, guys. I'm still waiting to catch an LGB F-18.
I didn't know if this is worth anything but I'll bring it up anyway. I was shooting at LGB this past Saturday and had the whole Devry parking lot to myself. I was there for about an hour when I was passed by an airport security car making the rounds. He looked at me as he passed but it didn't seem like it was a big deal. About 10 minutes later another security car passed. I got a weird feeling and decided to boogie. I waited for an incoming plane to land, shot it, and started to leave the lot. Just then a Sheriff's patrol car entered the lot where I was exiting. It may be coincidental but I'm glad I left when I did.
Has anyone heard of any recent problems there?
That is one spot where I would rather have a few people shooting at the same time.

I was lucky and in a R-22 when i got those pics.......i do like the C-17, very cool airplane.
I drove over to LGB after work today to try and shoot the Qatar C-17 but by the time I got there I was losing light so I decided to wait to shoot it another day. While over there I did a double-take when I saw a Metro III come in. I thought it was a weird coincidence since I just saw Alan's post from Inyokern. I headed over to Devry and saw it parked in front of UPS picking up some cargo. Luckily it left within a half-hour and I still had some light to play with.
Cool shots Skip and Glen! <rocker>
I tok these shots yesterday of that Qatar C-17..one on top of the hill and one from the street.

That should be quite a sight...I'd love to see that Qatar C-17 get airborne. What would be even better if it took off later in the afternoon when it bathes in the golden sunset light 8)
Here are some small aircraft I caught with the crew this morning/afternoon alongside with the VMA-232 'Red Devils' F-18s. Looks like the student pilot in the Beechcraft 'Duchess' had his door open for whatever reason.
Probably the most pristine 737 I have seen, I mean...look at the mirror finish on the exhaust cones!
I caught Fernando's head in the first shot <laughing>
Cool shots Duy ;)
Here are my shots. :)
Great shots guys ;) Love that 737 8) Some people have money ::)
I missed out. Heard everyone had a good time :D
Thanks Robert.. 8)

Oooh, any idea when she'll take off? I'm not getting the NATO confused with the second Qatar painted one right? I know they'll let them sit out there for a week or so prior to their first flight when freshly painted.
Looks like this one, except it has a #02 instead of a #01 on the nose and tail.
I think that other one is supposed to leave on Monday

Boeing delivers first C-17 transport to Qatar
Boeing has delivered a first C-17 transport aircraft to a customer in the Mideast.
Qatar Emini Air Force Tuesday accepted delivery of the first of two of the four-engine transport aircraft it has on order.
The country may order two more of the transports after it checks out the first aircraft, Boeing said.
Boeing is counting on sales to customers outside the United States to keep its Long Beach, Calif. assembly line going as U.S. Air Force orders wind down.
The United Kingdom has C-17s in service, and an alliance of European countries has ordered C-17s that they will operate on a shared basis.
Boeing could be the beneficiary of Airbus' woes with its delayed A-400M transport. If European governments decide to cancel the program, already three years behind schedule and billions of Euros over budget, their transport needs could be met by a combination of Boeing C-17s and Lockheed C-130 transports.
The Long Beach C-17 assembly line is the last major aircraft assembly line in California, a state that once was the hub of American aircraft manufacturing.
Did I miss something? Is the one out at Long Beach the second C-17? Was the first one painted the same??
g
This was the first Qutar C-17, the second one is the white one.
Noticed the out on the runway on my way home tonight. it looks like the nose gear collapsed.
Great catch Kevin! ;)
I just hope the crew/passengers are ok.
this is what i got today in my e-mail after the accident..
At approximately 3:15 p.m. a Cessna Citation jet landed on the Airport's main Runway 30 with collapsed landing gear. Long Beach Fire and Airport personnel responded. There were no injuries. Runway 30 will be closed until further notice. All commercial activity will arrive and depart on Runway 25R, until the main runway can be reopened. This information was provided by the Long Beach Airport Public Affairs office.
Good to hear that there were no injuries. :)
** AIRPORT UPDATE: RUNWAY 30 REOPENED**‏
Runway 30 was closed for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and has now been reopened. All commercial activity was temporarily diverted to Runway 25R while the aircraft was being removed from the main runway. No delays were experienced as a result of this incident. FAA investigators are on-site. At approximately 3:15 p.m. a Cessna Citation jet landed on the Airport's main Runway 30. The nose landing gear collapsed shortly after touchdown. Long Beach Fire and Airport personnel responded, as part of the Airport's standard emergency procedure. There were no injuries to the six people aboard.
Just a reminder to everyone, courtesy of Keith, tomorrow the second Qatar C-17 is supposed to be taking flight. Not exactly sure of what time, but I will be there around 10am. Could be as late as 4pm or so but just wanted to let you all know. Thanks for the heads up Keith. Kevin, see you there in morn. <thumbup>
Sweet! Cant wait to see Duy's shots with his 400. ;) <cheers>
Time I get there again it'll be back to regular USAF ones and that'll be all-damn! :'(

Don't you just love how those military guys - who've taken an oath to defend the constitution - forget that that means the freedom to take photographs? An oath is an oath, guys, live it or get out!
Anyone know if the C-17 has a reg no that's trackable on flightaware?

As of 4:30 tonight there was no N# on it.
Anyone going to try and make it today?
I'm heading out there within the next hour or so...gotta finish the morning routine and get the oil changed. Also, I stand corrected, the second flight is indeed on Friday. My apologies, Glen. I know I had told you it was Saturday. ???

Wow, what a cool scheme! Great shot.
While waiting for the C-17 this P180 did an engine run-up at the fence and completely sand blasted this Excursion for about 30 seconds. You can see the guy ducking inside.

Interesting. That's the same number that the first one had, and it doesn't come up valid in FlightAware. FAA shows it as a reserved, not active reg. I'm guessing it's like dealer plates? Related to the company not an aircraft?
Yeah I agree sort of like the temp reg that the AW-139's had for LAFD. They were under Augusta.
It looks like they used N9500* before
1. Canadian C-17 N9500R

Wow, what a week and a spectacular way to end it!! I would've been out there in a heartbeat...yep, 4 times this week if I did, but I was actually 3 hours late for work yesterday. For this aircraft, it will not have an FAA N number I bet as it is foreign.
Do they do the same thing for the USAF C-17s prior to USAF delivery? They used to for KC-10s. (Again, no N number as they will be US military)

The aircraft is scheduled to arrive and depart during the morning hours, after 9:00 a.m. The Antonov 124 is a large aircraft, usually white with blue markings, and will be noticeable as it passes overhead. Awesome shot, Skip! I'm digging your air to ground photos lately, especially this one. I see her every day when I drive home from campus, but not from this angle.
from where were the mil taxi shots taken and how long before they came in (or went out), was it known they'd be there...??? i'd like to be lucky in Oct ;) but just curious to know where you guys sit there...

Here are the pics. It looks like they had a problem with the #1 engine or a problem in the wing by the engine, there was fluid leaking out and the were putting dry sweep on the ground under that area.
Superb shots Kevin!! Nice coverage.

You can tell the A from the C by the intake. The A has the angled intake like this, and the C has a straight intake.

I was doing practice IFR approaches yesterday afternoon in a brown and white C172 did anyone happen to get a shot of me? I came in right behind the F-18 departures. The only reason I ask is that I don't have any shots of me flying that bird.

Need to let us know ahead of time as one of us could probably catch you. Chilibean, Keith, Kevin Joyce are probably the ones down there the most.
Will do next time. I figured since the F-18s were there, it would draw the cameras out. I'll possibly be doing some more approaches at LGB this afternoon around 630pm.

Anyone know if the AN-124 actually came in today???
Aye Glen it came in at 13:38. Its supposed to leave after 09:00
Is there any way to know exactly when it departs?
An AN-124 (Antonov 124) aircraft arrived this afternoon, Tuesday, July 6, 2010 on Runway 30. Departure is scheduled for Wednesday, July 7, 2010, after 9:00 a.m., on Runway 12. Use of Runway 12 indicates the aircraft will depart in a SE pattern, instead of the standard NW pattern.
The AN-124 is a large aircraft, usually white with blue markings, and will be noticeable as it passes overhead. The noise footprint of the aircraft is similar to a C-17.

TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED: I GOT A CALL SAYING IT WOULD DEPART AFTER 13:00
An AN-124 (Antonov 124) aircraft arrived Tuesday, July 6, 2010 on Runway 30. Departure is scheduled for Wednesday, July 7, 2010, after 12:00 p.m., on Runway 12. Use of Runway 12 indicates the aircraft will depart in a SE pattern, instead of the standard NW pattern.
Yesterday's e-Notify indicated the aircraft would leave today after 9:00 a.m. That has been changed to today after 12:00 p.m. Please note: runway patterns are subject to change based on wind conditions.
The AN-124 is a large aircraft, usually white with blue markings, and will be noticeable as it passes overhead. The noise footprint of the aircraft is similar to a C-17.

No, sorry. This was taken just before it was delivered back in August.
That DC-3 is gorgeous. Is it pretending to be a PBY though? <laughing>

Great pictures!
When you guys go to the Devry parking lot, where do you usually take pics? Toward the left or right side of the fence? Also, do you usually bring ladders? If so, how high?
I usually go when something unusual is in (F-18's,C-130's,NASA T-38's ect) some people bring ladders just enough to clear the fence...If you have a truck just stand in the bed of the truck. When something does come in I usually post it.
I can clear the fence standing on the lip of my car trunk. It's not that high.

That is a nice shot Ken
Used a tripod and the 10 second timer to make sure there wasn't any vibration. However, it's actually sharper here on my computer before the compression Flickr puts into it.
And I'm impressed with the 800 ISO performance.

When something cool like this comes in, give the rest of us a call. I would have killed to get a NSWAC Hornet local.
Thats the theme ive noticed in aviation photography, no one wants to give away there secrets. :-X

It isn't just aviation photography... A lot of photography is like that, especially among people that make money off their work. Guys that take spy photos of new cars don't call each other up and say "hey, there's a new Corvette prototype over at ______, go shoot it like I did" ;)
With the guys that get paid for their shots, the idea of "the more the merrier" doesn't come into play. :P
I receive calls from Chili all the time about KLGB because I asked him to let me know when something special comes in. I'm sure he would do the same for others, but really, who wants to make a bunch of phone calls every time something comes in?
I guess we could try and set up some kind of texting blanket like Josh did when he use to alert us about VooDoo1.
I let people know whats coming in but i dont have every one phone number..those NSAWC birds came in unexpectedly by the time i went down there to find out what was going on with them they were getting ready to leave..how John knew about them yea i was on the phone with him wile i got the call saying they were in town...but as Glen says yea i do call or tex him saying there is something at KLGB and at the same time i let keith and Damon,Fernando,Diego know oh and Mary & Alfons..those are the members numbers that i have.. As for Kevin he's usually there when i get there. so there is no secret going on over here
Guys let's take it easy, I don't want to see this thread turn into a negative one please!
Not negative, but constructive.
I was nowhere near a computer on Tuesday. It's great Mary put it in the shout, but for the most part, most of us don't check the site repeatedly throughout the day.
Robert, the idea is, you don't have to make all the calls, and I wouldn't expect you to. But you call one guy, he calls another guy, at some point someone calls Keith and then we all know about it ;-).
Or the blanket text message system would be great.
I was @ Van Nuys got a txt before they took off! Anyway, at least somebody caught them, in good light too! ;)

Picked up my friend at LAX this morning, spotted and shot some pics and headed down to Long Beach only to find the shout that she wouldn't be coming in today. :(
Going back down Friday if they get her fixed and out to LB.
Saw the TWA DC2 and a Tigercat on the ramp. Got some stares from the folks setting up and a couple of airport police so we didn't park and try to shoot anything today.

The airport police at Long Beach are usually pretty cool. Never had one single problem with them at any of the "usual" spots. I even parked in the middle of the road by Boeing, set up my ladder to get a shot of the AN-124 parked, and he just waved as he drove by.
I saw :
Fifi
2 x SNJ's
L-29 (racer)
Border Patrol heli(small white one with a blue band)
Coast Guard HH-65 (regular one not retro)
Tiger Cat
I forgot to ask what time FiFi came in but they said theyll be flying at 9 AM tmw
Fifi landed just after 12 today. As of this afternoon she had only one flight scheduled for tomorrow at 9. The person I talked to said she'll probably fly on Sat. but didn't have any more details. I

Probably to pick big stuff up for the Billionaire Sheiks.....Cars , Motor homes , dragsters , gold , speedboats , building material for estates......whatever.
I know there were photos of it taking relief supplies to Hati. Maybe picking up horses(quarter horses, Arabians, etc) was one rumor.....

Damon,Yes I sure did buy the DVD of the Vigilantes. As well as the Kestrels and Bounty Hunters DVD's.
Found this photo on wiki. Great old shot of a C-74 at Long Beach back in the day. You can see Signal Hill in the background.

WOW!!! The good ole' days at Long Beach. Nice picture.
I remember some of those old Convairs at Mugu, flying workers out to San Nicolas Island. I think their call sign was "Island Lord XX", or something like that.

BAD GUYS!
Great pictures.
I assume it was some sort of ex, but why was it run out of KLGB and not Los Al?
Same reason why the military loves going to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway and Grand Junction.
Pull in, hand the guy a credit card for gas, go watch football on the plasma. It's a lot more convenient for them.
(You get free sodas and pizza at Grand Junction as well)

makes sense...How do we talk them into coming to VNY more often? :)
Probably not VNY. They go out to the Pacific to do their ACM and LBG is so close to the ocean. I think that's why and the perks they get like Ken said.

Oh well. At least we have Chuck Thornton's T-38 and F-5, as well as some L-39's at VNY.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! :)
Here are some MORE pix of Allegiant as well as some Delta from yesterday.

Since it was a rainy day, all arrivals/departures were out of RWY 12 today.
N864GA AAY550 from Las Vegas, NV (LAS)
This aircraft was built in 1989 for SAS as LN-RMJ.
This aircraft wears the new livery for Allegiant, with a revised sun logo, bolder Allegiant titles, as well Allegiant's new slogan, which is what I like about the new livery. This is also the beginning of the last full week for Allegiant at Long Beach (the last day is next Monday, November 28).
Allegiant Air officially ends Long Beach service, and 32 years of regular MD-80s at the airport
After a brief one year, Allegiant, headquartered in Enterprise, NV, exited Long Beach Airport today.
The last flights were:
AAY555 to it's hub at Las Vegas, NV
and the very last flight...
AAY535 to Vegas
ALLEGIANT will continue to serve out of LAX.
Allegiant at LGB: July 1, 2010-November 28, 2011
Thanks For The Memories :(
N871GA AAY555-LGB-LAS
871 was built in 1991 and wears the new Allegiant 2010 livery, which was first unveiled on their 757-200.
30 years of regular MD-80 flights end, but there may be an occasional flight, such as a charter flight. The first MD-80 rolled out of Long Beach in 1979.
