Yeah, not sure if Riverside is long enough to handle them. So maybe out of March.

Runway 9/27
Dimensions: 5401 x 100 ft. / 1646 x 30 m

a 5400ft runway good enough? I hope they use March since its 2 miles away, but I can go to Riverside too.

I wondered about this after I posted the info. I hope they can operate out of Riverside, because on a clear day, the lighting is absolutely perfect. I've put in a few inquiries to ACC and the Phantom Society & Holloman PAO about this - if I hear anything back, I'll pass it along.

Update - ok I just heard back from somebody at the Phantom google group, they said that ACC requires everyone except the A-10s to use an 8000' runway.

The Navy has this listed as a Tac Demo by VFA-122... I would love to see a Super Hornet demo at a small field like Riverside... anyone know if this is a true demo, or just passes? I thought in the past all the fighters could do is hot passes.

He does a decent no loop demo. Usually Legacy Hornet in past years. Also sometimes the 144th FW will do fly-bys as well out of March ARB. Missed approches ;D

Has anyone thought about hanging out on Van Buren road to see the C-17 takeoff from there? Is it even possible, or do they block off that area during the show. I'm thinking about driving down to see this show - I've never been there before. What is the parking situation?
Title: Re: Riverside Airshow 2010
Post by: kick Z tail out on March 07, 2010, 11:45:22 AM
I still have yet to attend this show, but from what I hear, the parking is ridiculous. Most people end up parking in neighborhoods and industrial areas nearby and watching several blocks to the airport. I do think I'm going to try to make this show this year though. Especially for VFA-122.

A media pass to this show is worthless unless you want to get on board the media flight the day beforehand. They do not allow media to shoot from the static display line in front of the crowd. Media/arrival day is almost as much fun as show day, if only because of no crowds. Parking has become a huge hassle since the new buildings were put up near the main entrance. GET THERE EARLY, it's quite a walk! Stay late too. I think there was a shuttle available last year. This show gets very crowded, esp near show center, I'd advise shooting from either the west end or the east end.

Nate, you've never been to this one???

Title: Re: Riverside Airshow 2010
Post by: f4_phantom_fan on March 10, 2010, 10:41:41 AM
Usually the only practicing has been by the C-17 and Heritage Flights, though I don't think the HF practiced last year, so they flew it twice on show day. Outside of that, the day beforehand is mostly arrivals.

Dang this show looks really good. KC-135, C-17, F-16, F-86, F-4, and Super Bug...hmmmm this might be an interesting show to attend. I'm just a little concerned about how bad the crowds are there. I've heard some bad stories.

Well, see after 2007 its gotten more crowded, and people stay past 230 now that the C-17 goes up. When it first went up, the airport was deserted, now people have caught on...and stay alot longer.

It looks like a short demo, maybe something like a 3 or 4 pass one. Hopefully I'm wrong and it's more, but they don't have a big block of time set aside for it... If I remember correctly it looks like 10 minutes for the Tailhook flight AND the demo itself, which isn't much time at all.

Good question, especially since F-4 West is also listed at Yuma now!.

Yuma lists the following:
F-4E Flyby F-4E 10:18 am 10:25 am
USAF F-16 & F-4 Heritage Flight F-16 & F-4 10:25 am 10:33 am
USAF Viper West F-16 Demo F-16 Falcon 1:00 pm 1:40 pm

Riverside lists:
F-4 "Phantom", F-16 "Viper" & F-86 "Sabre Jet" "Heritage Flight" 3:10pm

I guess the question is do they recover at March ARB or Yuma or where? Presumably Yuma.

By the way - the spot everyone shoots from is by the tower.

Personally, I go for something different than everyone else with better cameras and lenses ;)

The old spot I used to like was the corner of TAXI A and TAXI B, but the C-17 over there I think wipes that spot out in the afternoon. That spot was nice because you wouldn't have the car lots in the background of the shots.

The last few years I have shot from where Taxi G hits the ramp/showline. Victor Archer was there last year as well.

Nate, yes mostly just arrivals on Friday, however the C-17 demo usually practices and so does the Heritage Flight, though they didn't last year. Hoping they will this year.

Keith, do you know if Kevin is going to be the pilot for the Sabre? I know he was in 2009. Maybe he might know if they're going to practice the HF.

I assume the Phantoms will be at March on Friday, but that's just a guess.

I'm hoping one will come over to Riverside to practice the Heritage Flight, but there's no guarantee they'll do it - ya never know. By 'museum' I am assuming you're referring to the March Field museum - I would think you'd be able to view their takeoffs at least, from the museum. I thought I read somebody saying they'd be at Yuma today - not sure why, as their show is also on Sat.

It looks like I'm attending as well tomorrow. :) I've always wanted to check this show out. :D

A side note though being the weather nerd I am. The Santa Ana's are supposed to kick up this weekend. 30-45mph in some areas. Riverside is in a wind tunnel...so it's going to get windy. I thought I'd let everyone know ahead of time. Plus it's going to be warm.

John T Freckman's CJ-6 N621JM

(https://apsocal.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2765%2F4520593964_c943ed573a.jpg&hash=fa36f3a85832e967dd78080d545e211b1d5b5de0) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/phantomphan1974photography/4520593964/)

John Freckman is Ret. USCG and Sikorsky logs all rescues in their helicopters. So he called them and they had all 5 of his. Some off the coast of LAX. They also sent him the logo for the rescue, sort of like a kill marking, it's a "rescue" mark. The above shows the dates of the rescue.
