Drove out to NAFEC on Thursday...Complete bust. 2 hornets, 1 CH53 all day The catch of the day were 2 Merlins returning from some type of sling load work. Please don't judge me on these photos alone...Weather was aweful and I was using a new lens...

That's definitely a rare catch. 8)
But yeah, NAFEC is never good this time of year. Not only is it hotter than blazes, but the activity drops WAYYY off down there this time of year. Sucks to drive all the way out there for nothin. :(
Maybe that is the one that is going to be at Big Bear next Saturday
I was warned of slow activity before I drove out there...I have had better luck during winter months...
Also, any c&c on my pic..Let me know..
Phil

Jim, how is the dirt road holding up out there?
Saturday, the only place to shoot from was the end of Aten. The rest was cruddy and a good way to spend the day waiting for a tow.
well, dating allmost year and a half back, in 2008 i had a nice time at EC;
Robert
Nice pic's, Robert. ;)
Just got back from a day and a half (Fri-Sat AM) out at EC. Will have photos up soon, but here's the rundown on what I got: three color birds on Fri - blue tailed Harrier, VMFA-323 boss (was on display at Miramar last year), and the all-white VFA-125 Hornet <rocker>. VMFA-323 had four Bugs on Friday, left late that day, did not return. Blue tailed Harrier and white Bug were still there as of this morning.
Also, about 40 T-45s (if I see another one, I'll.......well nevermind, lol), my first Growler (VAQ-129 low vis plain jane), some VMFAT-101 Sharpshooter Hornets (one of which appeared to have a kill mark on it), some AD tail coded Bugs, and bunches of Marine helos - 4-5 Cobras, two hueys, six Chinooks. A USMC VIP transport showed up late Fri, left this morning.
Weather & lighting started out good on Friday morning, but got worse as the day progress (thin white clouds, which ruined many shots) and became flat out overcast at times. They switched the pattern in the late afternoon, so I managed to get some takeoff shots from the end of Aten. Bright & sunny this morning, looked like it was gonna stay that way. Looks like the dirt roads are drying out.
Keith, how did you guys do out there?

Thanks, i concentrated on getting some shots of the diamond takeoff after it passed us. Most of the time i just am still in shock after the takeoff that I forget to take pictures. Worked out well! When you headed out?
Any tips for shooting from the hay bails from the veterans? I'll be out there for the FC photocall on Thursday, but plan on hanging around until Sunday. I hope to see some of you regulars out there.

Well judging from going there last weekend, you probably won't be shooting form the top of the hay bales unless you are a spectacular climber. Last year there were more steps to help you up, this year it is just 10 bales or so piled high. I did see one guy up there, not sure how he got up there. So your best bet is to stand on a truck to get the best shots over the fence on takeoff. After that it doesn't matter too much if you're on a truck or the ground. Here is another tip, look back at the El Centro thread and compare my shots and Jim's. Now besides for the fact that his are worlds better then mine, you might want to consider moving down the road a couple hundred yards like Jim did. It depends on what type of experience you want (i.e. you want good shots or you want the experience of seeing the show from the end of the runway). I personally haven't moved down the road to take picture yet because I like sitting at the end of the runway to much, but as we all know head on shots can only do so much for you.
Other then that be careful for mud (if there is any out there still) out there, you will get stuck, and make sure to get the Imperial Valley mud off of your car quick it is hard to get off once it dries and hardens. Best place to spot other military arrival action, IMHO, is where Aten Rd changes from a dirt to asphalt road (drive to the end of Low Rd, and go right, Basically hug the base perimeter fence), on the map it is the corner of Aten Rd. and John W. Finn Blvd. that's the money spot.
I can say that, if you haven't experienced the practice from the hay bales, don't pass it up. You won't only see it in a way unlike any other, but you'll certainly feel it too! ;)
I was lucky enough to shoot from the bales a lot last year so this year I'm looking more for different light and angles.

Well said Jim. That's my problem is that my love of being at the end of the runway trumps the urge to move down the road to get better shots. Oh well!

Now Thur & Sat both prectoces on base and other days over the range (closed to public). ;)

I believe they fly at the same times each day. You know they do have a day or two when they are over the range 3 times a day. I want to say that one of those days is Friday, and the third practice is around 3:30 i think. If your on ASB they have a good thread, and folks who can answer all those good questions.

6 finally did fly for the afternoon flight on saturday, which I was glad to see. People were speculating, so I was glad to see Baxter get back up and fly.
Initially the roads were nasty... luckily I have my mud terrains. 8) It dried up reasonably fast though, before long people were actually driving out in little Hondas and such like.

Nice shots John, I really like the Superhornet with the cloud behind it. It looks like you do to, its your new avatar. <thumbup>
Sortie and Chilibean. Thank you for the compliments. Glad you like them.

Moon over El Centro yesterday afternoon :)
Here's a Gladiator with the moon. :D
Some more Gladiators from yesterday... ;)
This Super Hornet carries the name of Rear Admiral Richard J. O'Hanlon (Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic) who was serving as commander, Strike Force Training Atlantic, Norfolk, Va. at the time of his nomination to Rear Admiral in 2007.
VFA-11 CAG at NAFEC. :)
Nice shot Nate <thumbsup>
ORALE VATO!!!!
Que? See catch on the Rippers!!!
Ahhh thanks guys. 8)
Saw this rainbow off on the western edge of the Imperial Valley early one morning and couldn't believe what I was seeing. The base was largely under the shadow of a big cloud bank at the time. This was when all those unsettled storms moved through back in February. Gladiator birds were loading up MK83s and heading to the Chocolate Mountain ranges.
looks like a very old scanned slide... cool effect though 8)

Interesting visitors yesterday!
Pair of F-5s and a CAG Osprey... :D
very nice F-5 pic!
Is that a section landing Jim? I never even knew they did that anymore.
Thanks!
No section landing. They came in and the tan bird flew as if he were a chase aircraft (high and off to the side) as the gray bird did a touch and go. I just timed the shot to catch them the moment the tan passed in front of the gray as they came around.
I tried this low light of the Canadian F-18 during dusk after I lost the light. :)

Thanks a million!
Here are some more from a nice day, even though they tended to shift between 8 & 26 and the light was always changing. Most of the aircraft on base are long gone now...
In the last shot, it almost looks like the pilot is wearing a helmet of WWII vintage. :D
Does that Blacksheep Harrier have "Maj Gregory "Pappy" Boyenton" on the rail?

Sure does! :D
Great shots Jim! ;)
Great Stuff Jim!! <thumbup> Have you moved to El Sweato? Seems like you spend a lot of time there.
Thanks guys!
I was really pleased with this angle on this Prowler also from Friday. :D
As well as the next and the Canadian Hornet from a few visits prior...
Some from Saturday...
All nice shots Jim, but my favorite the bugs with the moon!!!!!!!!!! >:D
Your shots are looking good Jim! You must be feeling better lately...
Thanks guys! I wish I could say the leg and foot are improving, but it's more a case of working with what I have. ;)
Here are a few more. Including a really "Plain Jane" from VFA-122 Also, the angle on the T-45 is accurate, he did the steep approach twice yesterday. :o
Interesting fact is that the F-18 Moon shot and the shot with the T-45 in the background were shot at 2:14pm and 2:45pm respectively although the angle is identical.
To round out saturday, here's a Sharp Shooter and the Blues' lead (3# for the day)

THE FOLLOWING TIMES.
TUES: WEDS: TUES, WEDS, THURS, FRI, SAT:

Now i keep looking, and hopefully soon they will have a new NOTAM which they will use for the over field practice, which if it is the same as last year is Thursdays and Saturdays. The morning being at 9:00 am, and the afternoon is at 1pm. But like i said they have not started these yet. And if i were you I would wait until these dates to go. Otherwise all you get is a takeoff and a few passes then they are gone to Shade Tree.
Sat morning the Diamond took off at 0804
Then 1224 for the afternoon practice
From today... :)
The first one is a reprise of the one I shot in 2009. This time, though, I was a lot lower as no hay bales to stand on...
More from yesterday...
The final one shows the opposing cross with a seagull behind the near aircraft and another bird just aboce and left of the other plane...
Awsome shots Jim <thumbsup> <thumbsup>
Thanks!
Here's the Fortus, some more Longbow action and another angle on Fat Albert :)
Great shots!!!!
Nice shots Jim! Good seeing you again. :)
Thanks guys!
Since my bad leg makes the show a no-go for me, I was happy to get the chance during the Blues' practices on Saturday and the copters were the icing on the cake. ;)

I have video of this pass, and right after it passes you can see the camera start to tip because of the wake caused by the C-2. I caught it just in time! :o
Haha yep, that was awesome. ;D

Thanks. Pushing the button is easy, getting the opportunity is the hard part - again, thanks so much.
I think Keith was saying he had the perfect camera for every shot, maybe just short on hands some times. The 300 prime should be perfect for pulling NAS numbers on landing gear fasteners;)

a couple of EC shots this winter, I like the harrier boss bird with the marines centenial logo on the nose, they don't get to that end of the runway to often but when they do, it's pretty cool, might see a lot of that logo this airshow season
El Centro Phohocall 2-21-13 has been moved into Photocalls: http://www.apsocal.com/forum/index.php?topic=3495.0
Please post here :)
Here's a EC retro shot of a long gone squadron, who remembers the field ever being in this condition.
Some more old school El Centro, things were alot more busy out there when the S-3's were around.

Stop screwing with us....LOL. Nice ones. Love seeing the old stuff.
Seriously!
Thank you guys, I'll keep digging, nothing against the T-45, but to me the TA-4's were more photogenic, Feb 1997
Great stuff! El Centro sure has had some cool stuff.

always trying to get a good heat haze shot, I got real close with this one.
The Big and Bad tomcat from EC in the old days, one attached to the Kitty Hawk, and the other with the Constellation, both who are sadly no more, or all three, for that matter.
How much I would have loved to have been there when the Tomcat was in service..... Keep them coming Charger!!!!!
Here's a couple example's of some long since extinct reserve squadrons, EC was a busy place when navy was full of jets, maybe half that or more now.

The three on top were taken around WTI this year, I really do need to keep better track of the dates on the throwback pic's, I'll work on that.
