There was a fire on the Grapevine late today so Fox was in motion. I got there late and didn't get a whole lot of flying shots (like only 3) but I'd rather have that than a moster fire keeping them up for who knows how long. <rocker>
Some great pix Jim 8)
Thanks! I got lucky.
Tanker 734 parked yesterday.
Great Shots Jim and Alan. love the paint job on that Neptune!!!
Love the second life for this Cobra

Shot some stuff out at Fox today...........Castaic fire. Love the Cobra! (hey Jim ya just missed it, btw! >:D ) ABC's 'Air7' came in for fuel and headed back out, as well. I'll post those over in the helo area.
Nice ones Brian!!!
Sweet! <thumbsup>
Here are some from east of the field...
Hey check this one out I shot at Fox late this morning. I have no idea what it is, but it certainly looks like a European design...........and those support trucks sure have good timing - driver decided to move right as the thing took off.

The standby bird yesterday, Tanker 00
It's going to take me a long time to get used to that Aero Union billboard on the side of those gorgeous P-3s. It's like taking a super model, and putting a tat across her forehead.
On that note, the paint on 00 is really starting to look worn out. Looks like it's all sun beaten over the cockpit.
Fox seems really cool. You guys are lucky. 8)
Ops today in support of all the fires...oh, and I didn't realize that P-2s had afterburners ;)
Hahaha!!!
Dang Tanker 27 getting reassigned to Fox. :P He flew on the fire out here last night out of SBD. We went up there today hoping to see them again since it's been 6 or 7 years since we've had a P-3 fight a fire in the area. :( We did get in an awesome position right next to the S-2s working our fire though. We snuck down 10 miles of trail in my truck and ended up right above the fire on a cliff face. :o 8)
I'm planning on being out at Fox / 60th in the 4:30 to 6pm timeframe, if anyone else is coming out....
What a day today with the constantly changing light from the smoke. Sometimes it was like sunset, other times, dusk. <rolf>
:D
The stenciling beneath the cockpit rail made this one too good to pass up!
NOTAM... Watch out for long lenses!!! <rolf>
LOL!! That's great! Nice one, Jim! ;D
Shots from yesterday...will likely be out again this evening.
And one of Brian....

Just a few from this evening.
Interesting to see the smoke from the other side.......the San Fernando looked incredible this evening. I never seen more smoke.
Jim, Michael and Alan, great stuff you guys are getting. It's a battle we seem to be losing, but yields for some great photos. I saw that smoke shot on your FB...just unbelievable. What a surreal feeling it must be able to see it that close. Very pretty colors with the sunset illuminating all that smoke.

Ditto, sweet shots ;)
Some of mine from today. I got some real GEMS of the Cobra returning from a mission this afternoon, with the black/smoky background. They were VERY close and suddenly at the last second decided to make a sharp 360 right in front of me! They later went out again and came back just as it was getting dark, used the tripod at about 1/40th sec. The daytime RTB shots will need some cleaning up, but I will post em asap. In the meantime, enjoy these babies........... :)

Oh yes, big time. That Cobra must of been pretty darn close....bet ya that was a rush! Great shots Brian! ;)
Question, where are you shooting from? Alan has a photo of you with other spotters and seems like it's all the way out there away from home.
I have several primary spots I shoot from: the two obvious places are the terminal building area and the area in front of the tanker base. My favorite spot is 60th West at Ave G (a bit north of the intersection on 60th - this is the spot where Alan's photo shows us - it's been VERY popular this weekend, I've never seen so many spectators out there before); a new one I tried today - the big burm next to the Armory by the tanker base - that worked out great since I didn't have to deal with the power lines when the Cobra came back; there is a dirt road that leads south from Ave F and goes along the NE perimeter of the airport fence towards the NE corner of Apollo Park - this is great for getting REAL close to the landings!; and sometimes I shoot along 30th if I feel like trying for banked final ap shots, I found another new spot in the desert east of 30th, but the a/c were either not banking where I hoped they would, or they were turning short. Plenty of options out here.
here's a couple of night shots of the parked Neptunes.........
Here are some of mine from Sunday...
Here's the reason for all the action.
First is just an old tree I thought looked neat with the smoke as a background. This was from 30th St West near Fox.
The next two are from Santiago Road in Acton. While shooting these, I saw one fire copter working during the dark of the night. Those guys have courage!
The last shot is from the raod leading up to Littlerock Dam. As the car gates were closed, I hiked back a little to get the angle I wanted. As soon as I took the shot, the Sheriffs and fire personnel came through to evacuate everybody. :o
That's the moon shining through the smoke.
WoooooW!!! Guys, very very very impressive shots! <rocker>
That N214JL, looks like it has a big engine! Look at the exhaust! Think this is the one that Skip mentioned. LIke the other one he shot with the Chinook engine.

ROAD CLOSURE ALERT (JUST NOTIFIED BY JIM MUMAW) - The City of Lancaster has decided to close off 60th Street West between Ave G and Ave F to all parking. So looks like we'll need to park elsewhere and hike into the desert to get those head on shots. Update: Now Jim's saying that the city's telling him that only the east side of the road (where all the parking is) where the planes go right overhead is the only spot that's supposed to be closed off, not nec the entire section between G and F.
Just came from there. Both sides of 60th have "no stopping" signs, but its only in the couple hundred yards that are most popular. People, myself included, are parking at each end of where the signs are and walking in. Not a bad walk.
Love the yellow of this Minden P-2...nice to see something different!

I went out there for a bit this afternoon, and must say 'pls excuse my overly dramatic' note above. I should've went out there and taken a look before posting that, lol.
What a joke - all they did was put out a few sparsely spaced sawhorses with those 'no stopping' signs. None of which were located in the 'sweet spot' as Jim calls it. LOL - do they really think that's gonna stop anyone? It sure didnt when I was there. There were six people parked INSIDE the signs and were there for about the first 20 mins I was on 60th........why did they even bother? :)

A gaggle from different locations today. :)

those are some nice shots Jim <thumbsup>
Some of mine from yesterday........
reposting this moonshot......... :)
No less than thirteen base aircraft in this shot during a break in the action today. ;)
Two from the morning's ops.
A nice P-3 and a Neptune with two turning and two burning! :)
Heads up! The Mars is on it's way to Mt. Wilson (1525 local time)
Anyone else notice the cents symbol on the left side of Minden's 55? By this afternoon, the inversion layer was gone and the smoke was a bit thick to fly in.
Some of my sunset stuff from tonight...........
Oh yeah Brian... hurt me some more! <rolf> <rolf>

Michael, love the pano... you ever sell your stuff?
Hey nice shot there, Mike!
I got some GREAT video of tanker 55 today, of all the bombers that went out, #55 was consistently the one who kept it the lowest, the longest, esp his first takeoff today. I don't have any way of putting it on you tube right now, but if anyone's interested, I can put it onto dvd..........his first takeoff - his gear was still down even after he'd reached the end of the concrete, and was at that point over the desert, still VERY VERY low. Usually the gear is up completely before they've hit the end of the runway and they're starting to climb. This one began his climb later than I've ever seen before. There was another guy out there filming with me and he too thought that it was the lowest he'd ever seen as well.
Some of today's shots......
Some from today (heat waves & all) :-\
Tried to get angles diffrent from those I've posted before.
Can't forget the Cobra! ;)
Looks like Jim & Brian got some more good stuff today!! Nice cobra and low fly over shots!! My wife is keeping me home from the action.
Hey Nate glad you like the Pano shot. I wish I could sell some shots -- have not figured out how yet. People just want copies or an e-mail.
Thanks!
Missed you out there Michael but they did knock off early.
Hey, were you up in the tower for that superb pano shot? <thumbsup>
Great stuff Brian and Jim! The action at Fox keeps rollin'!
My S-2s were up there too. I didn't even notice 72 and 73 were gone.
Great stuff Michael, Jim and Brian. Michael, I know what you mean..... ;D Scoopers where out in my area yesterday. Watching from gym. Small fire off of Crenshaw Blvd, maybe started by car accident. Both Scoopers came in and make at least one drop each. I think one of the county 412's brought in a hotshot crew to help.
Damon make a trip out to Fox-- you'll like it, Hey Jim, the Pano shot was done from the tower. They have a cat walk around it. Kinda far away from the action though.
One of these days.
"We need a clean up on 24!"
What do ya want to bet that somebody has a new call sign after this drop of a partial load on the runway today! :o
They continued on their run over the fire and returned to make a short field landing in good shape.
Hehe that was sooo funny......."did we have our door open???" LOL
Here are some of mine from today......Nate, here's a nice shot of #48 for ya. The Cobra shot kinda cracks me up too, like they're landing on the P-3.

Ahhh, that is a beaut! 8) And the Cobra shot really DOES look like that!!!!! <laughing>
A little more Cobra :)
Some foxed wing. Flying shots are all 1/60 while landing and taxi shots are all either 1/30 or 1/40. :)
Here's some stuff from this afternoon. Had another retardant drop on the field, although it wasn't much. It was almost dark when the Cobra got back this evening, so I ended up having to really ratchet up the ISO just to get 1/60th of a sec ss, so pls pardon the noise on those.
I think I found a good spot to shoot the P-3's banks.......... >:D
Decided to head out to Fox Feild today. Here are some of my shots.
P-3
Tanker 48
Tanker 55
Kevin, by any chance was that you in the black vehicle I kept running into today? LOL
Yep, that was me.
A couple more.
Ah, sorry I didn't recognize you, otherwise I would've at least waved, or something, lol...............nice shots as usual!

Great shots everyone, looks like APSC has it covered ;D
Lots of action today............ :) Cobra stayed on the ground all afternoon. :P
Shots from Monday.........launches quit right as the sunset light was beginning to get good. Somebody's been messing with the "no parking" signs, putting them further and further out along 60th West. And somebody else has put up a cardboard 'no parking' sign at the sweet spot.........
Things have picked up a bit at Fox.............they were taking off to the east this time, so got a chance to get some different angles.
Another batch. The last three were at 1/30th of a sec, hand held w the big lens.
I caught the mighty mites (Air Tractors) before having to head back to the office. :)
Closer is better. :D
Here are three from very late today. :)
:)
I'll be in the area on Saturday. What's the best time of day to catch some activity at Fox Field?
They HAD been flying all day the past few days, but activity has fallen off quite a bit
:)
Great shot Jim!
Thanks! I went there for the night shots of Sentimental Journey so this was a very pleasent surprise. :)
Some old shots of an H/P Herc.............
I miss those Hawkins and Powers C-130s. I have some old film stuff of Tanker 130 before it crashed a few years ago. :(
Here's a couple from the tanker ramp on Thurs.........

Well done 8) We saw 310 come home last night and knew he was probably up there.
BTW Brian, just realized I was a bonehead and forgot all about that picture I asked you for. :-[ Send me another PM!
Some more from yesterday...........
Badass shots Brian, you guys and your killer lighting... :o 8)
Thanks, Nate! Here are a couple more from Thurs, and one from Fri (P-3 and Huey). MD and I got within the gates of the tanker base today, and were up on the catwalk. I'll post those shots next.
From the catwalk today............ ;D
Batch 2 from today.......
Nice pics of all the aircraft. Nice to see those former Navy aircraft still serving in a different capacity. P-3, P-2, S-2, OV-10
