I believe somewhere up the ladder, LACoFD says they can do everything a type 3 can, with a type 1.

Some are, some aren't... but the Type 3 is the smaller brush engine, whereas the Type 1 is the typical fire engine you see in the city.

Yep they do, but they're issued out to agencies by the California Office of Emergency Services, with the intent of having each agency provide crews for OES strike teams across the state *should they be needed*. So LACo didn't have to pay a dime for the engine.

They do have to provide basic maintenance on the OES rigs and they can be used as needed for LACoFD purposes, but they cannot be assigned as first-due apparatus. The station up here in Newbury Park by my parent's house has a BRAND NEW OES type 1. If Engine 35 is down (It broke down yesterday as a matter of fact, KME- Keeping Mechanics Employed) they can use it in place of E35 for a period of time (I was told once, 2 weeks) as the first-due engine, but even so, the minute OES calls, it's gotta go. (E35 has a specific reserve assigned, E133, but E133 is being used as E33, so they're in OES 246 today)

Right, I wasn't sure if cash for maintenance came in the form of a grant or whatnot. Good call on the temporary use for the engine, Hemet has done that with theirs on occasion. Love the KME comment
