I was driving by the Riverside County Sheriff's Air Division and saw Star 94 (Astar) taking off. Unfortunately... I had the stupid 18-55 lens on. The crew saw me lock my brakes up ;) and jump out with my camera so they did some stunts for me... so I used the dang lens anyway. They did a fast 360 degree pedal turn and then a quick, full power nose down departure. That was nice of em  ;D

I switched over to my 70-300 and was hoping for a quick return, but no dice. I did wait in the windy 107 degree blast furnace for 40 minutes. I need a life.  <laughing> Right as I was getting ready to leave, the crew of Star 96 (Jet Ranger) walked out and fired her up.

Star 96 is a OH-58A+, similar to a Jetranger , as im sure you know .....that helo must to be a dog today....and those pilots must be dying. Its get way to hot out there.

You're right, RSO's air unit was built on military surplus (except for the Eurocopters). They used to have six OH-1s.

Agreed about the performance. Luckily they only have two of those things. They're turds. <laughing> It was definitely a lackluster departure in contrast with the Astar. They both had very similar nose down attitudes as they left... but Star 94 rocketed forward... Star 96 kind of just started going.
