Earthquake  registering 6.9 rolled through San Diego at 3:40 PM 04/04/2010. For about 20 to 25 seconds the quake started out mildly then suddenly got stronger. There have been at least 2 after shocks that I felt since 3:40 PM. No damage at my house so far.

It was actually closer to El Centro, centered in Mexico just over the border from Imperial County. Preliminary epicenter 12 miles southwest of Mexicali.

Must have been along the San Andaras fault, The fault line runs through El Centro into Baja California Mexico.

If I was in some of those buildings at El Centro (especially the fire station) I don't think you'd ever see a big man run so fast! <heliguy> (

My wife and I had 10 relatives over for Easter Sunday BBQ,  I ordered every one out of the house when the initial guake got to its strongest point. Kinda scary when think about it, you work your whole life for a piece of California real estate and you could possible see it fall before your eyes.

Cal Tech has upped the calculated magnitude to 7.2 on this puppy now.

The way it suddenly intensified about 10 seconds in really had me wondering how strong it was planning on getting. ;)

That was a good one :o.  I think they also shut down the airport briefly.  Saw a Alaska airlines 737 doing circles for a few minutes before making a funny approach into KSAN.  They also shut down terminal two, it had some minor damage to the ceiling panels.  That was one of the strongest i've felt in a while.  I was walking outside on a dirt hill, and the hill was "bouncing"

I think also parts of the 8 were closed.  Reports parts dropped a 1ft.

The thought crossed my mind... wonder if NAFEC suspended air ops so they could survey 8/26 and 12/30 for damage. Pictures and video have been coming in from the El Centro and Calexico areas of some pretty moderate damage. One of the car dealerships in El Centro had fixtures and ceiling tiles/ducts collapse into the showroom, and downtown Calexico is closed with some major structural damage to the buildings. Obviously the US side is doing better than Mexicali...

Video coming in from Brawley during the 7.2. Video obviously starts during the last half of the quake.

By the way in the last 20 minutes we had a good sized tremor roll through. I looked it up and it was a 5.1 aftershock in the desert just south west of NAF El Centro.

Yep just rolled into work and felt that one.  Also felt the 5.1 aftershock at 4:14 in the morning.  Just another SoCal Monday..

Yep that one rattled the windows in the family room while I was sitting on the couch. The dogs started barking thinking someone was trying to get in.  <laughing>

I slept through that one. I looked at the USGS shake maps this morning, it looks like the aftershocks are decreasing a lot compared to yesterday. But I heard the threat of large aftershocks is up to 7 days after. I'm sure NAFEC suffered some damage considering how close it is to a couple of these aftershocks plus the initial shock.
