I will have a scanner, but would rather have the odds in my favor from the get-go.

LAX Tower has a different freq for the south complex vs the north complex, so make sure you have them both in there.

Airnav.com has the freqs if you need them.

Here's the lame backlit shot of the A380 I took from In-N-Out

A380 up close by SBGrad, on Flickr
backlit, and too big a lens (35-70mm)

a few seconds later it was better, but now it's only a rear quarter shot

However, there is a sidewalk on Pacific Highway, so you COULD walk to the south and get the sun behind you if you park at In-N-Out.  But that was my 1st trip and I didn't give myself enough time to go do a recce before the A380 came in, so I was stuck on the grass.  It was also my first time seeing an A380 so I wasn't sure what lens would be needed.

Lessons learned.

Please Ron, no backlit shots!!! J/K.  Yeah you could walk a bit south if you wanted to but remember there is that overpass so you need the right lens (small) for the A380s I would guess.

Ha, ha, I hear you about the backlighting.  I keep that photo around to remind myself to plan better.  To tell the truth, I've never walked too far south so I'm not sure what lens I would use.  I DO have an 11-16, that is wide enough for any flying jet at any range.

Challenge accepted!  Might have to wait until next year to see results-- headed to SF this weekend, not too sure how much shooting I'll get in before we split.

I can live with the backlighting, it's the glare that I can't stand!

Love that Astrojet.
Too bad the DC-10 never wore that scheme in the old days.

Some pictures from Sunday afternoon, Jan 7

One from my bucket list.    I had only seen the Kalitta planes parked before, so it was a good catch for me.
