Fence Check Going Offline
Postby Liza Ľ Wed Feb 01, 2017 12:10 am
Hello Members and Visitors,

An ugly situation has reared its head. This is a letter which has been difficult to write.

The lead for the programming team called me recently. We are dealing with 5-6 highly sophisticated hacks daily on top of the 30+ spam accounts added daily. The hacks are not coming from a person, but robots. They are trying to redirect people to drugs, porn, and fake shopping sites. Eventually, they will have the entire site redirecting people without choice. We are seeing other side effects from this such as site slowing, long waits while a post is added to a thread, email not being received, and my reference to adding a section for 2017, but not appearing on the forum.

Why are they doing this? The main reason is the software here is old and easy to hack. A firewall was added to the site to try to stop them, but they have been able to get through. If they can get people to the sites mentioned above, theyíre hope is the very low prices will entice people to load their credit cards. The rest from there is pretty clear.

The options are:
1. Leave the site as is and deal with the daily hacks until the site completely falls apart.
2. Update the firewall currently in place to a different one at a cost of $150/month. In order to protect the site from the level of sophistication in the hacks, this is the firewall to use.
3. Upgrade the entire site to take it out of open source software. To complete is estimated to be 110 hours at $60/hour.
4. Take the site offline.

I don't wish to see the site degrade and I cannot afford the other options. In full disclosure, I've not recovered from the over $16,000 it took to get the site back online after the server crash of 2010 not to mention the over 3000 hours in 10 months to get all the photos back into the threads (on top of the hours I've spent working daily on the site). Also, trying to compete with Facebook and Instagram is a losing battle.

In trying to determine the best course of action, the question of whether or not crowd-sourcing of sorts could aid in funding for option #2 or #3 was raised. The number of supporting members drops each year, visitor numbers are dropping, and Google ad revenue has dropped by about 2/3 over the last couple years. While some may be willing to give now, it would be only a temporary fix.

Upgrading the firewall will help for a while. It will only be a matter of time before the hackers break that code and we will have the trouble again. Oh, and a 6-month-pay-up-front commitment is required. Other firewalls could be an option, but the cost is still out of reach for me. Upgrading the whole site would help for a couple years or when a new update is available and need to go through a good portion of it again.

The site has changed in its 13 years, but that's to be expected. Times have changed. How people use computers and phones have changed. Heck, even how many photos are taken has changed. I receive notes throughout the year about how much people enjoy and value the site. So, taking it offline will be a huge disappointment for many.

What to expect from here:
1. When AirshowBuzz pulled the plug, people were furious. The bulk of the members and visitors had no warning. I donít want that to happen here. Iíve asked to keep the site online through the end of February. The programming team is working to try to stabilize the server so we can reach that date, but no guarantees.
2. The programmers have been able to place a temporary fix on the site to try to keep it going that long without too much damage to the server and other sites sharing the server. The hackers and spammers are relentless. As one can see, the numbers on the site at any time has drastically reduced. This has also caused the Google ad revenue to drop again by more than 60% of the already reduced income which compounds the money issue.
3. Fence Checkís PayPal account will have all customer profiles cancelled. Those who paid in 2017 will receive automatic refunds unless I hear otherwise. Anyone who paid in 2016 and wishes a pro-rated refund (to the date of this post), please contact me via PM or at I had to change addresses due to all the hacking and spamming.
4. A backup of the site will be made on the last day, zipped, and downloaded to go into storage.
5. The site will be removed from the internet. Nothing will be done with anyoneís posts or photos. They will just be removed when the site goes offline.

Iíve been a part of this site since day 6, became a moderator about 5 months later, and eventually bought the site. It isnít that Iím a part of Fence Check, itís a part of me. This decision has not been taken lightly. Unfortunately, the decision has been made for me.

From a very heavy heart...Liza
