With the days high temp at about 75- 80 degrees, it looked like a good day with unrestricted sunshine for a sail around the Harbor.
So that's what the rich people do for fun :P
I guess guys like us "Missed the Boat". I can only look and watch from NAS NI.

Yes it really is cool... crazy looking.. lol but nice. :)
Here is one of many U.S. Navy Security Patrol Boats that patrol and provide military security on San Diego Harbor 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Here is a great way to relax on a very sunny Friday afternoon. In the second pic, You buy a yaght, hire a couple guys to operate it for you and then YOU and a friend sit on the back deck and sip champaine all afternoon.
thats where I'm heading in a few hrs, over at Gillespie field right now
U.S. Navy Harbor Security escorting a ship into San Diego Harbor. THe Security forces are heavily armed, any show of any weapon will bring a responce from them. These Security Force boats help to keep civilian boats away from Navy Ships and on occasion will get betwen a civilian boat and the Navy ship if the Security Force feels there might be even a small threat.

Here's WWI-era view of subs, including the USS K-8 (such an imaginative name!) in San Diego harbor, from a stereoview card. Thought I'd share the pic with the group before it sells.

Here are a few pics of people relaxing on a very nice day in San Diego while the Red Bull Air Racers fly overhead.
Hi Guys took my new EOS-50D and My new Tamron 200-500mm lense and got some shots of folks out on San Diego Harbor enjoying a great Thursday afternoon.
With all the pleasure boaters, Naval Security was also out in force as well.
Oh man, summer in San Diego 8)
I saw this guy out having fun on San Diego Harbor on 12/22/2009, 3 days before Christmas.
All you guys in the cold white north take note.
First pic on this message board. I hope it doesn't get rejected like my attempts on jetphotos.net or airliners.net. I was in SD in mid-January and was lucky enough to catch a picture of the USS Stennis coming into S.D. Harbor.

Best bet would be over around dog beach in Coronado to snap up shots of planes coming into NAS North Island. Check out the Thread (http://"http://www.apsocal.com/index.php/topic,399.0.html"). Word of advice though is that the "authorities" over there sometimes don't take to kindly to people shooting planes for some reason, so shoot at your own risk.
My First Post here. We get lots of interesting ship traffic thru the harbor. Here is one of the stranger ones.

If you go to Dog Beach, Please do take a bag large enough to hold your camera and lens covered until the aircraft is close enough to
take the pic(s). When you have your pics put the camera quickly back in the bag til the next aircraft flys by.
During the warmer months,(JUne, July, August, Sept) people who frequent Dog Beach have become weary of Photographers with expensive digital cameras an long tele photo lenses. The Coronado Police Department recieves several calls from people who believe that the Photographer is photographing the people on the beach and not the aircraft. If you are approached by Law Enforcement Officers PLease cooperate fully and let the officers do their job.
I have been told 3-4 times that taking pics of government owned aircraft is illegal either on base or off base. I have admitted to taking pics an have been allowed to keep the pics. Some officers may ask you to delete them, I suggest that you comply with the request. They could at the very least confiscate your camera and you may not get it back.
The NAS North Island Civilian PD has been very lax about enforcing the federal law off base, and will just let you know that it is illegal to take pics of any government property including the aircraft. The City of Coronado Police Departmnt is more demanding on this issue. BEWARE.

Nice shots. Spanish are a bit far from home. Multi-national exercise??
So i made it down do San Diego Bay in the shadows of the USS Midway, and snapped up some shots of the the three carries sitting on the other side of the bay. From Right to left: Vinson, Nimitz, and the Reagen. Not the best shooting conditions, but i can't make it there early in the morning. This is a stitched photo that was originally 10,000 pixels wide (enough to see crew walking across the deck)..but that darn 300kb max size kinda takes away the fun.
wow what a sight, too cool.
As i was at the end of the pier i noticed this guy slowly moving up around the Midway and towards the edge of the pier. I also noticed something in the water in front of the boat. As it got closer i realized it was a dolphin in the water. I've seen them out and about before, and i think the dolphin pins are over and the Naval Amphip base near Glorietta bay I wanted to take a picture of the dolphin coming out of the water, but as they approached me they were eying me, and i got that uneasy feeling of "put the camera down" even though i'm sure i would have been fine. So anyway they took him into one of the pier areas where they proceeded to somehow get the dolphin on the boat (i missed it, i had to do a double take to makes sure i was seeing it right). Just something a little unexpected today on the water, and glad i had the camera with me.

For Carriers on So Cal Ops Departure and Arrival times are generally never announced publically. IN the case of ship leaving on a major deployment or returning from a deployment those times are announced 24 hours in advance Such as was with the USS Carl VInson CVN-70 That departure was announced 36 hours in advance of the NOvember 30 departure. I posted pics in the North Island tread and on my Facebook page.

I'm hoping the rain holds off until after the game. Right now, the forecast indicates that it won't start raining until much later.

Technically speaking, neither. I live in Coronado, 3 blocks from the ocean. ...but I do drive across the bridge every day to get to work, and the camera is almost always in the car. If I see a warship in the bay, and it's going in the right direction and I have a few minutes I'll usually stop. I got very lucky with the LST, 30 minutes earlier or later and I wouldn't have seen it.
Great! I also shoot the military ships coming and going in the Bay. Thanks for answering me.

Interesting ship, don't think i have ever seen one like that before. Maybe for good reason too, i looked it up and it is low like that to except 3 LCACs. Looks like it is a brand new ship as well, only being excepted into the NAVY last month. Good catch!

The US Navy & Marines have been training with the Canadians, New Zealanders, and Japanese since June 11th, for Operation Dawn Blitz 2103.
