Sweet, will be looking for it ;)
I have seen them in Reno but not in San Diego.
The Red Bull Air Races have in San Diego each of the last two years. They only do about a a dozen reces a year. It ould not surprise me if San Diego was not on the schedule. The first year 2007, the planes flew from Brown Field, then last year the flew out of NAS North Island.
Nice, might check this out... ;)
The Red Bull Air Races return to San Diego May 8th, 9th and 10th see the link

Check to see if restrictions on camera equipment. ??? >:(
Hopefully the racers will be flying out of NAS North Island this year like they did last year. If so I'll cover it from on base on the parking ramp. Going to base ops tomorrow to try and find out more about the race and a question about flightaware.com.
The temporary runway is at Brown Field this year.

T.Y. Kevin I'm planning to be in an area at the south end of the Quay Wall pier at NAS North Island for the 11:30 practice and maybe for the 2 PM practice as well. Traffic flow really sucks going off NAS until the 25th as the Beach Gate is closed for road construction.
If I remember what I read in the Day and Night section of the U-T Newspaper of thursday. Flying satrts at 2 PM on Saturday and at 1 PM on Sunday for those planning to attend. I'll be on the Coronado side on friday and on saturday.

Have fun, wish I coud go but too much to do :'(
Hi APsocalers, The weather over the southern portion of San Diego county was cloudy, cool, windy and a bit foggy. So as a result, the 10AM, 11:30, 2PM practices were all washed out. I did not stick around for the 2:45 Practice so I was not able to get even one pic of a Red Bull Air Racer today. On the way home about 5 miles north of the race course the weather was bright sunshine and a good 5-10 degrees warmer.
This U.S. Navy SH-60 Helo flew the Flag while the National Anthem was being sung prior to the start of Red Bull Air Race Qualification.
These three VFA-94 F/A-18C Hornets performed two low fly-bys during opening ceremonies for The Red Bull Air Race in San Diego.
THese Pics are of Red Bull Air Racer Hannes Arch #28 in Qualification 1.
Sweet ;D
Pics of Red Bull Air Racer Paul Bonhomme #55 in Qualification 1 on 05/09/09.
PIcs of Red Bull Air Racer Nicolas Ivanoff #27 from France.
Saw the Red Bull Helo go over the house heading north back to Camarillo.
Nice shots rander, how far away were you? Or what lens did you use.
I will post my Sat photos this week sometime taken from the South Embarco by the Media Center.
I met the 3 Hornet Drivers from VFA-94(?) from Lemoore.
They looked at my shots on my camera to critique themselves for Sunday's flybys.

Damon: I was at the far south end of the NAS North Island Quay Wall Pier. The Audi red quad pylon and the yellow Brritling start/finish Pylons were the closest to my location.
I was using a 75-300 mm lend mostly in the 300 setting. It was kind of interesting watching the aircraft come down San Diego Harbor having to make a right hand turn around the USS Nimitz CVN-68 and then maake a moderatly tight left turn in front of my position to enter the race course.
Speaking of that Red Bull Helo, It had a camera that gave continous live TV feeds to the Jumbo Trons. Yeah we had a Jumbo tron to watch at NI. THe helo pilot would turn toward the homes at Coronado and feed live pics of a pool party in the back of one of the homes so everyone looking at a Jumbo Tron could see the party.
Thats funny about the pool party. Maybe ones of these days I will make it down there. Too bad they don't televise it. It use to be on cable. Not sure anymore.

If I remember correctly the Qualifications and the race were broadcast live in ESPN Radio AM 800 in San Diego Check your local listings in L.A. area. Starting in September Fox Sports Net will show tape delayed broadcasts of each of the 6 2009 Red Bull Air Race events.

Rander,
I was sitting right infront of that tree just behind the aircraft in the "Red BullAR.29.jpg" shot.
I know it would be a stretch, but do you have a bigger version of that shot?

He told me he was about 40 Hsp short of the leaders.
I see Besenyei has gone to a MXS.

I couldn't pick myself out, but I am right there (circled).
Also, here is my perspective at the same time. (400mm lens, F5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 100, and post processed)

I can't say it was all that much fun, I was at NI at 9:30, waited in the car until 10:45 sat in my own lawn chair until 12:30 when the National Anthem was played, stood til about 1:15 until the fly-bys were done and sat until 2:00PM when Hannes Arch began qualifying. The weather was not at all co-operating as at times they could only have one aircraft over San Diego Harbor at a time. I was there until the first round of qualifying was over then went home with huge stress headache and a dark red sunburn. The weather was bright sunshine at Brown Field and at my house. Just over the race course the weather was crappy. I took lots of pics and haven't even posted most of them yet.

Ok, I feel better about not going :-
How about this:
$35ish for admission, $10 for parking at the Convention Center, and $12.50 to park at the Public Pit Walk.
I found a front row blanket seat at about 11:30 am, sat all day long until the last qualifying run ended at 5:30 pm, and was at the pit walk from 6:15 - 6:40 pm when the minimum wage security kicked us out * not so nicely *.

My best two shots of the day probably.
Pretty much right out of the camera, just resized and sharpened.

Well, the parking and admisssion at North Island was, well, FREE if you could get on base. Two other Coronado viewing areas were also free parking and admission.

So that's what an exploding pelican looks like! Just the other day I was wondering about that. ;D
