Being a Midway Museum Volunteer I'll Start posting some of the 30 or so aircraft they have and some views of the ships spaces that have been restored and are open for public viewing .

I went to The Midway Museum's Aircraft Restoration Hanger, Where skilled volunteers take aircraft in somewhat of a deplorable condition and turn it into a level 1 or level 2 displayable
condition. Here are some pics of F-4U Corsair that the Midway Museum got out of a barn in Riverside County. The aircraft was fairly well dissambled, but we got enough pieces to make a beautifully restored aircraft. There is still a lot of work to do.

Here are a few pics of an OV-1 Bird Dog aircraft that will be similar to the one flown aboard Midway at the end of he Vietnam War by a Vietnamese Army General with his family. The original aircraft is at The Naval Aviation Museum.

The Midway Museum has this SBD Dauntlass that was in work but has been tabled for now. The Midway Museum has an SBD Dauntlass on board the ship on display that is on loan frorm a private collection.
The Midway Museum has this F-7U Cutlass also known as "The Gutless Cutlass" and "The Ensign Killer"

Here are 3 classic propeller aircraft
1) A Navy Model SNJ-5 All Navy SNJ's were painted Yellow in case one went down, it was easily spotted from the air. The entire AT-6/SNJ production, only the -5 models were Navy aircraft. and the only aircraft with tailhooks.
2) A SNJ Dauntless, This particullar aircraft is on loan from a private collector, and is in very good condition.
3) A TBM Avenger produced by General Motors. This is a Midway Museum aircraft.

Yep, I was thinking the same ;)
There is a place here in San Diego that will take the metal panels, make exact molds and make exact fitting clear plastic panels complete with fastener holes.

When USS midway was decommishioned in 1992, the yard workers at Bremerton removed the stained glass window and stored it in a warehouse. Two Midway Volunteers drove a pick up truck to Bremerton found the window and brought it back to San Diego, so the USS Midway Chapel could be fully restored.
This USS Midway Museum F-4U-5 Corsair well be in the City of Coronado 4th of July Parade on Saturday July 4th.
Three shots of ( I Think) the right wing of the F-4U-5 Corsair. Both wings required heavy rework to get them to look something like original.

Negative on the data plate. The guys at the hanger say its a -5 Corsair. but then I haven't check for my self.

I love the Midway. Beats the heck outta any land based museum! 8)
Had the chance to get on-board the USS Midway before the crowds for an article I'm writing in airshowstuff.com. It was a fun little venture, had bad weather (May-gray in August!) for the shot, and I learned that shooting on this ship is not that easy. As far as clutter I know what you mean. When I first went there shortly after it opened they did not have all that like stanchions, benches and such. Now they do. Partly probably some one did something to a plane and they had to keep them away. I would have suggested if you where their early, you could have asked to move some of the lighter things out of the shot for that moment and put it back after the shot. I do that sometimes at airshows like trash cans or firebottles. Or I use my wide angle lens if the clutter is on the side.

The one thing I moved in 95% of my shots was the big info board they put right in front of the plane. Although board makes it sound light...this was a freaking 30 pound steel paper weight! They were really awkward to move and i banged up my shines a couple of times, but it was well worth it.

Lori Cartmill, Executive Assistant, was there to receive an award on behalf of the Midway. The awards honor the dedication and creativity of local event professionals who have earned the respect and admiration of their clients and peers. On November 11th the Midway Museum will hoist onboard their F-4U Corsair in a 3PM Pacific Time ceremony on the Flight Deck. The aircraft is curruntly in the FRCSW Paint Booth at NAS North Island. The Paint process will be complete on 11/10/09. I am attempting to get some photos of the aircraft every day after work. All Veterans will be admitted free on Veterans Day. The San Diego Veterans Day Parade just happens to pass the Midway Fantail during the parade route I am planning to be onboard on Veterans Day, for the parade and for the onload of the F-4U.

Do you know is it open to the public? I mean i know the ship will probably still be, but how close access can we get. I would love to get over there for that.

Maybe for while after the 3PM Crane Aboard Ceremony is over until the museum closes at 5PM. The wings will be spread on the aircraft. Thursday Morning the wings will get folded and the F-4U will be moved to the Hanger Bay for display.

I was onboard The Midway Museum all day 11/11/09 meeting new vets and seeing former shipmates I had not seen in a while. The Ceremony to bring the F-4U aboard started at 3:00PM and through the hoopla the order to actuall get the F-4U onboard didn't come until slightly after 4:00PM and as you can see from the pics it was getting very dark and for those with professional cameras the lighting was getting BAD Quickly.

You make a good point...
They should have a special event once a month where they launch aircraft off the deck and then recover them. People could pay $200 a head or something to come shoot it. Or maybe even once a week. I can just see it now... "Tailhook Tuesdays" ;)

I went to the USS Midways Aircraft Restoration Hanger to volunteer some time, shot some pics of thes Piasecki PV-18 HUP-2 Retriever Helo under going restoration at the North Island Hanger. The Rotor Blades have aluminum leading edges the rest is Spruce wood.
The Midway Museum is scheduling a mid February unload for this helo. The museum is going to use the Piasecki as part of the museums Tribute to 100 Years of Naval Aviation. The Tribute will be in February 2011.

in the second pic, F-4F.04 the left wing is in a roll over stand. the primerd part facing toward the camera is all that is left of the original metal. the rest will be all new aluminum.
In the third pic F-4F.06A are copies of original manufacturers drawings of wing spars held together with cleckos. once the NEW spars are test fit the cleckos will be replaced with rivits. Those drawings are courtesy of The Smithsonian Instution. The drawings show each part in it full size with precise measurements.
The 4th pic F-4F.03 shows what is left that is still useable. About 75% of the left wing will be new aluminum.
THe 5th pic F-4F.02 shows drawings for skin panels for the left wing.
Lastly pic 1 F-4F.01 and pic 7 F-4F.07, the green primer is new skin panels and fuselage ribbing that the volunteers, cut, test fit, and assembled to make the main fuselage complete.

That is some pretty neat stuff.
Although today the holes may be drilled by computer, the assy laser located, they still are temporarily held into place by cleckos.
Some things never change.

A yearlong celebration of 100 years of Naval Aviation, covering the scope of all Naval Aviation activities, including aircraft, people, ships, innovations and significant events. This nationally sponsored series of events is scheduled to kick off Jan 2011 and continue throughout the year. A major airshow is planned for February 12. Midway will obviously share in the celebration. More details will be forthcoming. In the meantime... I have decals, let me know if you want one. Or visit:
