My husband says constantly, "Oh it's only a plane." And looks at me like I'm nuts when I start getting bummed because he wont pull over when we pass a busy airport and let me get some shots. He wont really take me on my plane spotting adventures. He'd rather sit down and play xbox. Oh well.. to each his own. :D I recently got a much more dependable car that I feel confident enough in taking out of town, so I leave my husband at home so i can take my time. lol
What do your spouses/SOs think of your love of plane spotting and aviation photography?
My mom thinks I'm just 'plane' crazy. Better than going to the mall and beating up on old folks or sitting at the computer smashing the keyboard when getting owned in World of Warcraft....as the case with my friend. He's a desperate cry for help.
My wife thinks we are all nuts <laughing>
And I know I am, lol ;D
But other than the expensive camera equipment, it is not a bad hobby/way of life!

Lol sure isn't!! I love it. I hope to become a pro aviation photographer some day. I want to work as a civilian for a near by AFB.
My wife is very understanding and is a great sport about letting me go out and shoot planes. We have 2 and a half year old twins with another on the way, so I really have to choose wisely when and how often i get out. But in the end she is great because she knows this is a huge passion in my life and she supports me.
My fiance says anything that gets me out of her hair that doesn't involve naked women or heroin, is all right with her.
Humm well as for me being single and all i don't have no one really saying anything to me...some of my family members along with a few friends ask why do i do it..i say it helps with stress. Sometimes i do forget to get my priorities done cuz I'm hanging at the airport all day but o well.
My wife has always been really easy going about it... she even goes with me to El Centro every year a couple times, and always goes to Miramar with me. She knows how much I love aviation. Though sometimes she doesn't understand (aka doesn't like) how during fire season I'm out the door within 5 minutes when a fire breaks out. She prefers the air show stuff instead, since I can schedule that kind of stuff ahead with her. ;)

You mean she's not a fan of you driving 100 miles around a roadblock to drive up the side of mountain? <laughing>
You and Nick are crazy when it comes to that stuff...You got more guts then i do!
Lol I love reading this kind of stuff.. I know I'm not alone. :D
Keep 'em coming!!
My husband and I don't have any kids, but we are trying. Right now, I can pretty much just drop what I'm doing and go. I know I wont be able to do that when we have kids around, so I'm doing it as much as I can right now. :D
In all seriousness, my fiance has the philosophy that if I don't get to do things that make me happy, then *we* can't be happy. She knows that I enjoy things like Airplanes, Baseball, Car shows, etc, and that it's important that I'm doing things that I enjoy because if I don't, then that unhappiness will find it's way between the 2 of us.
As long as it doesn't really get in between us, like we have specific plans and I go out shooting generic LAX shots instead, she's fine with my hobby.
Well i think im very lucky with my lady, because when she's not taking care of the house you will see her at LAX taking shots!
First it was hard she use to tell me what you do overthere >:( until i told her go with me! ;) i let her use my camera and that was it....now we spend some good time spotting whenever we have time... :Dhere take at look..........
Well...you can always point them to this....

I also like to keep people around me who are exponentially more obsessed with things I like than I am. I can point to my friend Josh who can tell you the count on Mike Schimdt on a random Tuesday when he doubled off Vida Blue in a make up game at Candlestick Park in 1984 , and say "see honey, I could be like that..."

I can shoot all the planes I want.

Notice on the plane spotters guide that they have a stratocruiser on there... Better hop in the Delorean to see that one flying.

<laughing> She went with me the one time I had gotten dropped on! ;D She was in the truck reading a magazine and didn't even notice the tanker dropping retardant 75 yards in front of the truck :o
Haha I wish my husband would be as easy going about it. :D
Almost if not all if my equipment is from my wife over the years for wedding anniversaries or birthdays. She's a great wife.

That's so cool!
My honey is my dream girl. Those of you who know her understand :)
(Those of you you who don't, she loves air shows and is a great photographer)
My wife has no problem with me going out and shooting. She will usually go with me to airshows. We even made a day of it last Saturday and combined Plane Crazy at Mojave, Minter Field fly-in and a drive back over the Grapevine and 138 to see the wild flowers.
It's obvious to me some of you are very lucky indeed. That's so cool!
A lot of people have told me that my engagement photos show that she's a keeper... just because she agreed to it. Little do people know, the aviation theme was her idea 8)
Here she is on the Midway and watching Goshawks in the pattern at El Centro...

I guess I really better do something nice for her when she gets home! ;D
This was also my wife idea, I just had to make it happen. John Collver's SNJ "War Dog" at TOA and Michael Herbach Photography
That's awesome!

Me too ;) cool
Having been married for 29 years now, I have had a number of hobbies over the years that my wife has put up with, but was supportive with all of them. My Photographic hobby is purty limited as I just don't load up my camera and run out the door to one of a wide varity of events that <apsocals> members run off to and get the shots. Being already 60 Y/O, I'll let the younger photographers do that.
I will be out of the San Diego area for several months from May 10th til perhaps November 2010. I'm going to Minnesota to spend time with my mother (she 93) and while there will try to get aound to some of the southwestern Minnesota, northwestern Iowa, and eastern South Dakota airports and attractions and post pics when I can. I'll have a computer with me and a DSL line to access the internet.

Aero Union Tanker 25 (P-3A) is contracted to spend the 2010 fire season in Egan, MN beginning in May. So there's going to be something cool there already. ;)
I actually hang out at airports more than my husband does. I have been into planes since I was 10 years old. My Dad worked for Macdonald Douglas and my Aunt worked for Hughes. She worked there when Howard Hughes was there.... It is in my blood and all of my friends thinks I am nuts. So I enjoy going to events just as much as my husband.
