Title: CAF's B-17 'Sentimental Journey' coming to the AV area
Post by: f4_phantom_fan on July 30, 2009, 10:38:05 PM
FYI, for the warbird fans, the CAF's B-17, Sentimental Journey, will be coming to Fox Field and Mojave airport during Sept 21 to 25. The brief note in the paper did not specify which days it would be at Mojave and when it would be at Fox, so stay tuned. I'll post again when I know more. Their website did not mention Mojave, but the site also listed the aircraft as being in Lancaster (and at Edwards) during Oct 14 thru 20.

My sources (fellow MTM board member) says it'll be in Mojave on the 21st.

I just received confirmation that Sentimental Journey will arrive at Mojave on the 21st, then hop over to Fox on the 22nd. It will stay there until the 25th.

This is actually very interesting to me.  I'll be on tour with Sentimental Journey during this stop, and I haven't heard anything about this stop form the Arizona Wing of the CAF.  I asked them about it when I first read this, but all they told me was that nothing is confirmed yet.  I'll have to ask them again.

If anyone is interested, here's my dates and locations with Sentimental Journey (dates and locations can change, as we are finding out):

Please do, as I heard from the planning folks on this end that it is confirmed, and we've even lined up the financial sponsors.

Alan, I heard back from the Arizona Wing today, they said "unofficially" we're "officially" going to Mojave!  It seems like your info might be better than ours (at least mine).

Damon, I can't wait!  I've grown up in Phoenix and I've loved Sentimental Journey since I was a little kid.  I was lucky enough to fly on her from Mesa, AZ to the Grand Canyon back in May.  It was the best flight of my life, especially since I was able to log 0.5 hours of left seat time on that flight.

If anyone wants to see some photos and a short video from that flight here are some links:

Matt, looks like I'll be seeing you at Santa Maria. According to the person coordinating everything, I'm supposed to join you folks there for the flight to Mojave, since I know the area.

Sounds good to me.

I still can't seem to get an actual "official" statement from the Arizona Wing on this stop, they are still officially stating that we are flying from Santa Maria to Fox Field.  And, they now have a press release on their website stating the arrival date and time into Fox Field as 12:00 noon Monday, September 21.

I'm still going with your info on this, you seem to know more than the CAF on this one!

That press release is from 1 May, before we made the final arrangements. Between the museum and the local chamber of commerce, we've ponied up a lot of cash to make this happen, so, we'll see!

I'll do my best, but I won't have any Internet access while I'm out there (other than my BlackBerry).  Alan has his finger on the pulse of Mojave, he seems to know more than even the CAF's Arizona Wing on that stop.

It's too bad the tankers are almost gone.  Anyone got a match?  ;)

Oh well, you got a Space Shuttle now!  What are the chances of that departing the area while I'm there?

I've had my fingers crossed since I found out about STS-128, but I thought it was launching too early.  Now it seems like it's a possibility, and the stars seem to be aligning in my favor.   ;D

I received an official update to my tour schedule today from the Arizona Wing's Wing Leader, the info came right out of Sentimental Journey's Tour Book (locations could still change):

  • Thurs. Sept. 17 - KVIS - Visalia Municipal Airport
  • Fri. Sept. 18 - KVIS - Visalia Municipal Airport -> KSMX - Santa Maria Public Airport
  • Sat. Sept. 19 - KSMX - Santa Maria Public Airport
  • Sun. Sept. 20 - KSMX - Santa Maria Public Airport
  • Mon. Sept. 21 - KSMX - Santa Maria Public Airport -> KMHV - Mojave Air & Space Port -> KWJF - General William J Fox Airfield
  • Tues. Sept. 22 - KWJF - General William J Fox Airfield
  • Wed. Sept. 23 - KWJF - General William J Fox Airfield
  • Thurs. Sept. 24 - KWJF - General William J Fox Airfield
  • Fri. Sept. 25 - KWJF - General William J Fox Airfield -> KMIT - Shafter-Minter Field
  • Sat. Sept. 26 - KMIT - Shafter-Minter Field -> KFFZ - Falcon Field

Mojave Air & Space Port is now OFFICIALLY an afternoon stop, and Shafter-Minter Field is back on the schedule for one night.
I realize that this isn't your problem, but the change has created a "situation", as the museum already paid a lot of cash for the crews' hotel rooms for that night, and they go and change the schedule without even so much as a phone call.

As for the shuttle, it currently is slated for departure on Friday, the 18th, but that could easily slip.

Last question...do ya'll have headsets on board, or do we need to bring them? I have a flight helmet, but it's single plug. Any suggestions?

We might be staying the night, he just told me we had an "afternoon" stop and I assumed that we were going to Fox Field the same day.  Like I've said before, you seem to know more than we do!

I would love to catch the shuttle, hopefully they'll push departure back.

They do have some headsets, but I don't know how many they have with them.  They aren't normally given out to passengers, just crew and CAF members.  I'm still trying to decide if I should bring my headset with me, don't know where/how to pack it.  All the jacks on SJ are double plugs.  How many in your group are flying with us from Santa Maria to Mojave?

There's two of us, myself and another gentleman who was a B-17 crewmember during WWII. I'll bring headsets for the two of us. We're flying over earlier in the morning, leaving MHV about 8...not sure of which of Al's planes we're coming in, but probably his Aero Commander.

Great shots, Alan!   I got a ride in SJ back in '06 and got to sit in one of the two nose gunner positions on takeoff. To say it was 'quite a thrill' would be an understatement!

Here's SJ's arrival from ground at Fox today....

I'll make sure we put some out next time, don't want to make things too easy on y'all!

Thanks for coming out and seeing our airplane!  According to the current schedule, we are going to be taking her back out for the Edwards show and then three more days at Fox Field after the show.

Here's one from our flight from Mojave to Fox Field.  My shots didn't come out as good as I had hoped, but it was still a lot of fun taking them.  A big thanks to Bob "Stambo" Stambovsky with Stambo Aviation for taking me up in his Piper Lance and making this a possibility.
