Title: Fox Field - KWJF
Post by: akradecki on July 02, 2009, 06:57:58 PM
Anyone know anything about this Caravan? It's registered to L3 Communications EO/IR Inc., in the Experimental category, and appears to be some sort of law enforcement surveillance demonstration program, maybe a means of adapting the Iraqi Birddog program technology to domestic use?

(Note to Josh - I started this thread for general stuff from Fox separate from the Fox tanker ops thread...hope that's ok.)

Fox Field in Lancaster will be having their 2nd annual AirFair on September 12. Evidently, there will be a number of helo static displays, including LA County Fire, the Marines and the CHP. I'll try to find out if they'll have an opportunity for photogs to shoot arrivals.

From the archives........I was going thru some of my old stuff for some possible calendars, and dug out a few I'd forgotten about. The P-2, at the time operated by Hawkins and Powers,  had blown a tire upon landing and as you can see, ended up in the dirt.

Nice start to my 4 day Presidents Weekend.       Went by Palmdale this morning and nothing was going on.   Drove up to Mojave, nothing going on there either.    Headed over to Fox on the way home.

Busiest day I have seen out there since the Station Fire.   Usually so very quiet on days when I can make it.  :(

I was quite pleased to catch the A-26.    It has always one of my favorite planes, but I have only seen them in museums until now.    He made several take offs and landings while I was there so I got to savor the moment.

Loved the nose art too.

Two of the Dornier 328s Boeing is using to shuttle people between Seattle and the AV for the 747-8 Project.

My father in law works there, so maybe I'll have to go bug him at work some time!  That looks like a cool place.  Where's the best place to stand for arrivals and departures?

Heads up to Brian, my fellow air tanker buddy... I guess Minden's BAe146 tanker project was spotted at Fox today. Supposedly they're looking to get it certified to fly on fires sometime this season. I'm gonna miss the P-2s. :(

That would be cool to see.  Is it just the one tanker?  I would think they still need the P-2's!

Yeah so far they only have one but both Minden and Neptune Aviation intend on getting rid of their P-2s in the very near future. :( Will be a sad day to see come. It'll especially be ironic in the case of Neptune Aviation... the name won't be relevant anymore. :p

Minden has one, Neptune has one also, and a company called Tronos is working on a 3rd. The Tronos 146 completed it's first aerial test drop last October. (See their picture below). There's also a video online of theirs doing low altitude testing of air tanker flight profiles and the word is the plane handled very well over ridges and canyons. It has a speed brake which will be nice.

Cool, but too bad the P-2 will fade away.  Maybe sell them to a warbird owner, but probably too big and costly.  Use to be one under restoration at Almogordo Airport.

Caught this today. Not sure when this showed up, but it's in the industrial area near the armory. Here's what's left of C-130E #61-2360A.

That C130 carcass has been further chopped up and moved inside that end unit.   No longer visible without peering through the building windows.
