I've seen video shot from Coronado that had AF-1 passing behind the buildings downtown, so I doubt he went over the bridge, and/or flew up the bay.   There isn't enough room for a 747 to make the turn to 18 if he flies inside the downtown buildings, he has to go outside.

I'm guessing they flew the standard approach to KSAN, kept it high, and then made a left turn to 18 when they were over KSAN's runway.  I've seen C-17s do that more than once.

Watch the video and decide for yourselves.

Ok i agree I don't think he flew up the bay, i've seen that approach your talking about, just a high approach into KSAN then a hard left into 18.  Seems like a odd aproach for a 747, I'm sure the cameras on the Vinson had nothing to do with it? :D

Ok so I just saw a pic on TV and AF1 flew the bay route into 18!! Amazing backdrop, wish I knew that I would have gone down.

Did he go into Miramar or KSAN?
He went straight into NZY, a lot easier since he can go straight to the Vinson without leaving base.

Hey Chris, you'll laugh, but I saw a C-17 fly THAT approach before too. lol.

WTF!  Ahhhh my luck, i spotted AF1 about 15 miles to the east of Chula Vista, the he made a right turn, and basically paralleled the approach into KSAN.  In all of my years working down here I've never seen an approach like that.  It must have taken him over the Coronado bridge or something. My only guess is that they were doing an approach that brought them close to the carrier for the cameras.

Ok, so the reason i couldn't find the NOTAM is because it was just issued today.  As i thought i looks like POTUS is just flying in for the game on Friday and that's it.

You would think....But in 2005 when Bush came out i watched as they flew south down the coast then a big left turn and then lined up for a 29 landing down the beach.  I was thinking it would have been awesome to see from dog beach, but i'm sure they had that bad boy locked up tight.  Plus you always tend to see heavies land on 29....don't know if i have ever seen one land on 36.

Speculation here, but if you have a heavy on a missed approach into North Island i don't think they would be able to turn quick enough to get out of the way of KSAN.  Where as a Hornet can just make a hard right to avoid it.  I will ask my buddy here at work who was a helio pilot over there for years if he knows.

29 would be impressive but I'd imagine they'd bring him in on 36 for security purposes... Probably leave on 18 as well would be my guess...

So looks like San Diego will be graced with its second POTUS visit on Friday.  Obama is going to attend the carrier classic basketball game on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson (and on the hanger deck if it rains).  I tried looking up the NOTAMs to see when he flies in but i'm terrible at searching those things.  If anyone knows how to search those or knows when AF1 is due in can you PM me?  I work about 7 miles downwind from rwy 29, and maybe can see him this time around.

He flew out at [redacted] right over [redacted].  I've got a few hundred pix from the weekend's car racing to go through, but I'll post something eventually, hopefully before I go to Miramar and get further behind.
