Join in the Celebration - One Hundred Years of Naval Aviation
On February 17, 1911, inventor and aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss taxied his seaplane to the battleship USS PENNSYLVANIA anchored in San Diego Bay. A boat hoisted the \u201chydroaeroplane\u201d aboard the ship. Later, it was lowered to the water and Curtiss returned to North Island. This historic event, more than any other, prompted the Secretary of the Navy\u2019s decision to purchase the Navy\u2019s first aircraft.
In tribute to this and the 100 years of progress and achievement in Naval Aviation, hundreds of historic and current Navy aircraft will take to the skies February 12, 2011. Naval Air Station North Island - the official \u201cBirthplace of Naval Aviation\u201d - will provide prime viewing for this once-in-a-lifetime aerial review.
On February 12th the Air Station hosts a spectacular Open House event welcoming military and civilians aboard. Guests will stroll the runways to view historic static aircraft displays, enjoy the Aerial Review viewing, Carrier and LHD ship tours, Metal Mulisha motorcycle stunt shows, antique car collections, sponsor and vendor booths, live entertainment, food and beverage, children\u2019s activities and more. Leading up to this grand finale event, Sailors and Marines will participate in golf tournaments, a 5K Fun Run, and historic aviation film festiva

The Navy has announced a special air show -- including a massive flyover of San Diego Bay by more than 150 aircraft -- to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of naval aviation.
"It is expected to be the largest aerial flyover since World War II and the largest in San Diego since November, 1918," said Lt. Cmdr. Alli Myrick-Ellison, a Navy spokeswoman in Coronado.
The Navy is billing the show as a once-in-a-lifetime event that will allow the public to see the aircraft in flight from vantage points all around the bay.
The show, slated for Feb. 12 at North Island Naval Air Station, kicks off what will be a year-long effort to mark the start of the Navy's foray into the air.
The free event will also include a timeline-like display of aircraft from vintage planes to the newest fighter jets.
It's also your chance to see inside a $4 billion Navy flattop.
Tours of Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships will be offered, along with a tactical demonstration by Marine aircraft and ground equipment.
The Navy's flying roots start in the San Diego region. In 1911, the Navy's first aviator, Lt. T.G. Ellyson, trained at North Island and later qualified in the A-1 Triad, the Navy's first aircraft.
