Yep, I've been able to learn a lot because of my dSLR. You can pick one up and learn how to do what needs to be done. See if it worked, see if you like what happened... if not, change settings and try again. With a film SLR... that would be expensive, annoying and frustrating in my opinion.

Yep, I only got an SLR when film would not be an issue. Trying to learn with film would be $$$$. I saw two photographers at Nellis using film and high-speed cameras in 2007 and just watching them drop about 20 to 30 rolls of film each and thinking of the film processing costs ::)

Yes It Is, Robert, Sure am glad it's the Digital Age!!  I'd go nuts getting all the film processed (and the cost) and get Kodak to make digital CD of every roll of film!!  Yikes!!!!

Since I got my EOS-40D  I've shot over 5,300 pics since Memorial Day 2008!!!! THat count well behind those who travel a lot.

Be advised, as of late, base security has been hounding (even kicking people away) photogs who are on the Nellis fence line. Yes, on public property.

I'd bet the folks at Nellis are so sick of Photographers hounding them for various things they are starting to get a little roudy about it. Just be courtious and be cool about it. There must be 500 to 1000 photographers out there and from several foreign countries, who have these event booked months if not years in advance.
