They may have a media day for Red Flag at the end of August

Yep, I've been able to learn a lot because of my dSLR. You can pick one up and learn how to do what needs to be done. See if it worked, see if you like what happened... if not, change settings and try again. With a film SLR... that would be expensive, annoying and frustrating in my opinion.

Yep, I only got an SLR when film would not be an issue. Trying to learn with film would be $$$$. I saw two photographers at Nellis using film and high-speed cameras in 2007 and just watching them drop about 20 to 30 rolls of film each and thinking of the film processing costs

Yes It Is, Robert, Sure am glad it's the Digital Age!! I'd go nuts getting all the film processed (and the cost) and get Kodak to make digital CD of every roll of film!! Yikes!!!!

It's a fun hobby "aircraft paparazzi" oh ya, minus the celebrity and little or no money for photos

I'd bet the folks at Nellis are so sick of Photographers hounding them for various things they are starting to get a little roudy about it. Just be courtious and be cool about it. There must be 500 to 1000 photographers out there and from several foreign countries, who have these event booked months if not years in advance.
I made an announcement the CVW-5 was going to be at North Island last year, every day there were photographers either on base or at Dog Beach, at least 6-8 or maybe 10 of them flew in from overseas to be there. Amazing!!!!

You need to call Nellis and get a hold of public affairs (702-652-2750). Tell them you are a photog intrested in getting on base for Red Flag, and they should have the rest of the answers for you. Last year they were much more strict about who was let in and had less openings for photogs on-base (it helps to have some connections to some media who will back you if Nellis wants some history). Doing it this way, you will be allowed on the ramps for shooting close up.
More than likely it's too late for you to call them to get on this year, so don't be disappointed if you get a big fat no. But ask about next years flag if you do. They will run an extensive background check before you get any kind of access to the base.
Base Operator #: 702-652-1110 (in case you get lost)
Be advised, as of late, base security has been hounding (even kicking people away) photogs who are on the Nellis fence line. Yes, on public property.

How does one get to photograph at Red Flag? Do you need a press pass or do you need to know someone inside?

You will have to thank Bernardo Malfitano on Fence Check for these. I think he is the one who set up these maps
