Best bet would be over around dog beach in Coronado to snap up shots of planes coming into NAS North Island.  Check out the Thread.  Word of advice though is that the "authorities" over there sometimes don't take to kindly to people shooting planes for some reason, so shoot at your own risk.

If you go to Dog Beach, Please do take a bag large enough to hold your camera and lens covered until the aircraft is close enough to
take the pic(s). When you have your pics put the camera quickly back in the bag til the next aircraft flys by.

During the warmer months,(JUne, July, August, Sept) people who frequent Dog Beach have become weary of Photographers  with expensive digital cameras an long tele photo lenses. The Coronado Police  Department recieves several calls from people who believe that the Photographer is photographing the people on the beach and not the aircraft. If you are approached by Law Enforcement Officers PLease   cooperate  fully and let the officers do their job.
I have been told 3-4 times that taking pics of government owned aircraft is illegal either on base or off base. I have admitted to taking pics an have been allowed to keep the pics. Some officers may ask you to delete them, I suggest that you comply with the request. They could at the very least confiscate your camera and you may not get it back.
The NAS North Island Civilian PD has been very lax about enforcing the federal law off base, and will just let you know that it is illegal to take pics of any government property including the aircraft. The City of Coronado Police Departmnt is more demanding on this issue. BEWARE.

So i made it down do San Diego Bay in the shadows of the USS Midway, and snapped up some shots of the the three carries sitting on the other side of the bay.  From Right to left: Vinson, Nimitz, and  the Reagen.  Not the best shooting conditions, but i can't make it there early in the morning.  This is a stitched photo that was originally 10,000 pixels wide (enough to see crew walking across the deck)..but that darn 300kb max size kinda takes away the fun.

As i was at the end of the pier i noticed this guy slowly moving up around the Midway and towards the edge of the pier.  I also noticed something in the water in front of the boat.  As it got closer i realized it was a dolphin in the water.  I've seen them out and about before, and i think the dolphin pins are over and the Naval Amphip base near Glorietta bay  I wanted to take a picture of the dolphin coming out of the water, but as they approached me they were eying me, and i got that uneasy feeling of "put the camera down" even though i'm sure i would have been fine.  So anyway they took him into one of the pier areas where they proceeded to somehow get the dolphin on the boat (i missed it, i had to do a double take to makes sure i was seeing it right).  Just something a little unexpected today on the water, and glad i had the camera with me.
