You know not to rehash this, but there is no difference in the picture you took (of the C-130) then the one i did...And another thing i was thinking about, on ASB someone posted a ton of those pics from the base, and even Keith got shots from inside.  I still don't get it.  Might just be a power trip thing.

The guys on base went through the normal background checks to get on and photograph what was there. Even though you are shooting the same aircraft, base security has no history of you so you're going to get hassled. It's not a power trip, it's just normal (non-friendly to phototogs outside of the fence) procedure at Miramar.

You know the deal.  Just like Media on base [edit: at North Island].

See that long line of people getting physically screened for everyone's safety?  No prior record of them.

See those guys walking around who were not physically screened the least bit?  They are "vetted" media.

Same difference.

[soapbox]There were a few of us on base and from what I could tell (I didn't ask anyone because honestly it is none of my business) they were "vetted" media (save one, but the other was verified another way). I fit that boat so they gave me the green light. They did screen me, checked my references and called my editor. He called me two days after I called Miramar to let me know they called him to verify me and what'not blah, blah, blah.  Me being "vetted" would not have prevented the MPs from coming over and giving me the rundown over at Harris plant area the  because unfortunately, if you look on Google Maps that entire area is gov. owned land.  Because I have been published and my work is currently used for various things does not mean that I am not better than any of you... and I do not ever hint that I am (and I do not think anyone else does either)... it just is what it is. Sounds like some people think I'm complaining and trying to get into a pissing match over access... I'm not even complaining about the people out on the runway, it just shows how silly the normal excuse is that nobody can photograph the aircraft. If anything I'm more apt to get annoyed by the daddy talk telling me why they stopped me. I know why, and I half expected it... but at the same time, after having seen a lot of people out there not being stopped I figured what the hell. I parked up the road away from the area so the car wouldn't be on the roadway and walked in, still got stopped. So whatever. I was even standing in a place that ensured I couldn't even see any of the base facilities, let alone shoot them. But of course, Miramar is the only base that freaks out if you're even shooting up in the air.

Again, not complaining about the special people with the invites, so no need to explain the difference between being invited vs not being invited.

About the government owned land... close the road then. At El Centro, March, etc we stand right on the edge of government owned land... the Marines act like they're building a neutron bomb on that base.

So it's fine, I never shoot out there and never will again... that was actually the only time there's ever been anything flying into that base that actually interested me enough to try.

That is how the Marines run the land around the base.  I used to hang out on Kearney Villa road while it was still NAS and never a problem.  I simply wouldn't even try now because it just isn't worth it.
You would get the same MP visit on airshow weekend with 100,000 people inside.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I was referring to North Island and the Open House (edited the above as such).

The lame excuse is the only thing I have a problem with.

Just tell the real truth:
"This is US Govt Property,and you're not allowed to photograph from here without prior permission from the installation commander".

Simple. Easy. Straightforward.  Honest.

Regarding folks getting base access to do legit stories - FANTASTIC!
