Tomorrow at 5:47PM, the United 787 Dreamliner will touchdown at LAX for the first time with passengers. I will be at the airport tomorrow (probably Imperial Hill since United's terminal is on that side). It is arriving as flight United 1209 from Houston, TX (IAH). This marks the official debut of the 787 in LA, although it is the 2nd appearnce of the Dreamliner in LA (It first landed at LAX on a training flight). LAN will start flying 787s to LAX on January 1, 2013 (New Year's Day)

Do you happen to know if the UA 787 flight will be a regular one on Sundays or just tomorrow? Also what time is the LAN 787 flight scheduled into LAX?

There's that old saying of "You HAVE to be here!" Well, that was the case for me as the first ever Continental-United 787 Dreamliner touched down at LAX, marking the official debut of the 787 at LAX.

A few heavies at LAX and the LAX debut of the 747-8 Intercontinental from Lufthansa

Spent some time yesterday waiting around for the Lufthansa 747-8 to arrive. In my opinion, unless you look really closely or pay attention, it doesn't look all that longer. Although i miss the winglets!!!

Wow... this thread is just awesome!

First time poster, long time lurker. Being friends with one of your members finally convinced me to join. I am gonna be at LAX next week, and was hoping that one of you might be able to answer a few questions for me.

This one may seem somewhat specific, but it is perhaps the one jet I want to catch the most. Is there a specific runway that the Singapore A340-500 tends to land on? I would hate to be caught off-guards by not having done my due dilligence. I will have a scanner, but would rather have the odds in my favor from the get-go.

And 2nd, is there a runway in general that sees the most international heavies on arrival? I am interested in things like the Korean, Asiana, and UAL 747s, the A380s, Asian carriers, etc.

Any help y'all can provide would be awesome!

Maybe I'll see a few of you out there.

Nick

Hi Nick!!!

As a person who frequents LAX quite a bit. I can say from my experience that a lot of the Asian heavies tend to land on RWY 24-Right as well as with a majority of the A380's. Gate 123A is used quite a bit for A380 operations because it tends to be a bit easier for the A380 ground movement. That isnt saying that Gate 101 on the southside isnt used as well.

The Singapore A345 usually lands for the most part on RWY 24-Right, so with that in mind, you will have yourself a nice vantage point from In N Out and the adjacient sidewalk near the airport. Keep in mind that during this time of year, the sunlight favors photography from the Southside of the airport (Imperial Hill in El Segundo) rather than at In N Out.

NickPeterman

Thank you very much for the prompt reply! I am glad to hear from a regular, as others had told me that the Asian heavies tended to land more on the 25 side of the field.

Stay away from InNOut in the morning, because as mentioned, you'll have horrible back lighting.  I went to InNOut the 1st time I was at LAX and that's exactly what happened. Check out Airport Blvd or Aviation, right around 93rd street.  Ether place is much better for Runway 24 arrivals, and you can park on the street.  Get there early, look at both places, and decide which one you like better.

These are from 93rd just off Airport

..fyi, the A380 was at 80mm and it might've been a touch too much lens that close in.  If you've got a 70-200 you should be golden.

shot from one of the hotel parking structures (I was at a conference and snuck out to the roof during breaks...).  It definately came in on 2-4 (this was last Feb)
