Captain Melnick, Commanding Officer of  The Fleet Readyness Center South West (FRCSW) announced a few days ago that the FRCSW has recieved dual AS 9100 and AS 9110 certifications. The FRCSW is one of 6  military facilities in the DOD to have this dual certification. FRCSW is the only Navy or USMC facility to have dual certification.

What is AS9100-Series  certification?
AS9100  is the internationally recognized series of quality system standards specific to the aerospace industry. The standard is strongly supported and adhered to by major aerospace manufacturers, and they are demanding all suppliers meet its requirements. Based on ISO 9001:2000, AS9100-Series puts a particular emphasis on quality, safety and technology in all areas of the industry and along the supply chain. The series consists of AS9100 (OEM and Part Suppliers), AS9110 (Maintenance Organizations), and AS9120 (Distributors of Aerospace related materials, hardward and components).

What are the key benefits?

Confirmation that your production and operational systems meet the internationally recognized standard

Recognition for your company, leading to improved business opportunities

Fulfilment of mandatory requests from players such as Boeing, Airbus, GE and Snecma

Confidence of your customers who trust the independent third party audit, often eliminating the need for a second party audit

Easy search facility on the OASIS database, to check whether a company has already been certified, or for others to check the status of your company.

What is AS9110?
To more effectively address the needs of the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) segment of the aerospace industry, a complimentary standard was published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).  While it is based on AS9100:2000, AS9110 includes specific additional requirements that pertain to safety, reliability and airworthiness issues related to commercial, private and military aircraft MRO operations.

As is the case with AS9100, the AS9110 standard is founded upon ISO 9001:2000 principles and employs a process approach to managing the organizations quality management system.

Organizations that could benefit from AS9110 certifications are FAA-certified repair stations and manufacturers of aircraft systems, parts and components.

What benefits does AS9110 certification offer?
In addition to the opportunity for improved product quality, operating efficiencies and reduced cost, certification to the standard affords organizations a marketing advantage in promoting their status to existing and prospective clients.

Smithers Quality Assessments is accredited to certify companies to AS9100 and is in the process of being accredited to perform AS9110 audits and certification activities.  Contact us for more details.
